Back to the Basics: Fall Pantry Refresh & Storing Root Vegetables šŸ„•

Root vegetables like carrots, beets, parsnips, and sweet potatoes are fall staples - but how you store them can help them last longer!

Keep most root vegetables in a cool, dark, dry place or in the refrigerator, depending on the veggie. Remove leafy tops from carrots and beets before storing, and keep potatoes away from onions to help both stay fresh longer.

Graphic includes images of carrots and sweet potatoes with Healthy SD branding.

šŸ“£ Join the Conversation! Help Shape the Future of Food and Nutrition Security in South Dakota!

The South Dakota Healthy Nutrition Collaborative recently released the state's first comprehensive Food and Nutrition Landscape Assessment, highlighting challenges, community strengths, and opportunities to improve food and nutrition security across the state.

šŸ”Ž What did we learn?

Food affordability is a major challenge for South Dakota families, with many struggling to afford nutritious foods.

Rural communities face unique barriers, including long travel distances and limited access to grocery stores and transportation.

Local food systems offer opportunities to connect South Dakota producers with schools, communities, and families.

Stronger coordination and investment can help build on existing programs and resources to create lasting solutions.

šŸ’¬ Now, we want to hear from YOU!

Join us for a virtual community conversation to explore the findings, share your experiences, and identify priorities for strengthening food and nutrition security in South Dakota.

šŸ‘¶āœØ Planning a home birth in South Dakota? Here’s a quick heads-up to keep your little one safe and thriving!

Newborn screening is one of the simplest—and most important—steps you can take after your baby arrives. The blood spot test is best done when your baby is 24–48 hours old, and it’s vital for all South Dakota newborns.

Plus, don’t forget a hearing screen—because even babies who seem responsive can still miss important sounds. Early checks make a big difference!

Your midwife or provider can help review the screening info and make sure forms are filled out correctly so results aren’t delayed. And if you need extra forms or resources, SD DOH has you covered.

Let’s make sure every baby gets the healthiest start possible. šŸ’›

September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the simple test that saves thousands of lives every single year.

It’s a heel prick that checks for more than 30 serious but treatable health conditions. This screening gives babies the best chance at a healthy start by catching issues before symptoms even appear.
