Today marks the 25th anniversary of a day that changed all of us who lived through it. May we never forget ALL of the emergency responders that gave their lives to save strangers. That day exemplified the risks we all take on a daily basis and really brought it to the forefront of conversations amongst those outside of the responder community. Many think they know what we do and the risks we take but that fateful day showed the world. Every day we should honor those lost in the line of duty, but today belongs to those lost 25 years ago. We continue to lose more even afterwards from exposures suffered working in the rubble. 343 FDNY firefighters gone in the blink of an eye. To put that into a local perspective, that’s like losing the entire Winston-Salem Fire Department, all 3 shifts, on 1 call. Sacrifices like those from the emergency responders that day 25 years ago is why we should NEVER FORGET.
