A NOTE ON NAME CHANGE

I recently attended a history presentation where one of the panelists, a preservation architect, shared a thought that has stayed with me: when a building is completed, it is new. The next day, it becomes contributing. Over time, it grows old. But it does not become historic until its story is known and shared.

With that idea in mind, I removed the word historic from this page title and replaced it with old. My hope is this designation challenges us to learn the story of Pinon School, share it with others, and work together to ensure this place is recognized not simply for its age, but for its significance. By uncovering and telling its story, we can help make Pinon School truly historic.

In 1948, several schools in Pueblo County were still only one room buildings and students had little access to books and other educational materials. In response to this need, Pueblo District 70 created a mobile library known as the โ€œBookmobileโ€- the books, driver, and librarian were furnished by McClelland Public Library and the vehicle was built by Pueblo County. The Bookmobile served rural areas around Pueblo such as Beulah and Blende, and later served areas in town. The Bookmobile ran until the early 1980s. This photo from 1952 shows students in Blende waiting excitedly to exchange their books at the Bookmobile. Photo is courtesy of the PCCLD Special Collections Dept.
