Arbor Intermediate School celebrated White Cane Day on Thursday, Oct. 15, with fun and educational activities to raise awareness about the achievements of visually impaired people who use canes.

Students explored the history and significance of the white cane through a comic strip created by fifth-grader Grace Mejia with the assistance of an orientation and mobility specialist.

Miriam Gantz, teacher of the visually impaired, created Braille cards featuring the first names of fourth-grade students, who just finished reading a story about Louis Braille. Students also completed a white cane word search and brought home special candy white canes, and staff showed their support by wearing White Cane Day T-shirts.

Our Piscataway High School Counseling Department has been hard at work supporting the families of our seniors with the often daunting process of applying for financial aid for college!

On Saturday, Oct. 10, counselors assisted about 40 families in the completion of the FAFSA form at an in-person workshop in the Patton Cafeteria. Representatives of Middlesex College were also at the workshop to help families. The FAFSA is a graduation requirement and allows families to receive a financial aid offer from any college where they are accepted.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Dionne Hallback, a representative from the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, led a presentation on Zoom for families to learn about important topics such as completing the FAFSA, loans and scholarships, NJ state aid, and other opportunities. For anyone who couldn’t attend, a recording of this Zoom presentation is on the high school website under the Counseling tab, or click the link in the comments. ⬇

Thanks to Supervisor of College, Career & Personal Guidance Kelly Chilakos and all the school counselors for helping our seniors and their families plan for the future.

About 50 dedicated members of the Piscataway High School Future Business Leaders of America scoured Johnson Park on Saturday, Oct. 17, collecting 20 bags of trash and other debris to protect wildlife and preserve the park’s natural beauty.

FBLA’s initiative demonstrated the importance of having a strong commitment to environment and giving back to the community. Participants spanned out across the park’s walking paths and fields to remove discarded plastics, wrappers, and litter – as well as larger trash.

Beyond the environmental impact, the event brought a strong sense of teamwork and responsibility among the students who share a passion for sustaining a beloved local landmark.

Piscataway FBLA remains committed to community service and sustaining Piscataway. The students look forward to more cleanups and creating a stronger relationship among our schools, our community, and our environment.

Thank you to all the members of our Board of Education, who attended Workshop 2026 hosted by the New Jersey School Boards Association to discover new opportunities to serve the Piscataway students, families, and community!

The event in Atlantic City from Oct. 19 to 22 features over 200 professional development and training sessions covering legal, legislative, policy, and funding updates; keynote speakers; and collaborative opportunities with school officials from around the state.

While at the workshop, our Board members and administrators were able to view artwork from Piscataway students on display as part of an exhibit of student work from Arts Ed NJ. Students whose work was on view included Raymel Garcia Del Rosario, Kayla Johnson, Sanaiah Bowen, Luke Whitaker, and Jay Farrell of Piscataway High School (art teacher Lisa Lentini-Pombrio) and Joey Salles of Quibbletown Middle School (art teacher Rose Flanagan).

The Piscataway High School Students Against Destructive Decisions have been very busy for National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 18-24!

SADD students set up during lunch in the Anthony Commons on Monday, Oct. 19, along with the Piscataway Township Police Department, to continue spreading the message about the importance of safe driving. They had a Jeopardy-style game with facts about staying safe behind the wheel, where students won icy treats for correct answers. PHS students were encouraged to sign a safe-driving pledge banner.

They followed that up with their annual Chalk the Walk outside PHS. Students from SADD and the National Art Honor Society drew beautiful designs with catchy slogans in sidewalk chalk to get their message across. Superintendent Erskine R. Glover, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Glenn Lottmann, and Principal Chris Baldassano visited to check out the artwork and encourage the students. Thanks to art teacher Samantha Knierim, adviser of the National Art Honor Society, and her students for helping out.

SADD also volunteered at the Piscataway Bike Tour on Saturday, Oct. 17, helping to sign in registrants, and passing out snacks and shirts. One of the SADD leaders, Laila Simmons, rode in the bike tour.

Later that day, SADD students volunteered at the Randolphville Elementary Schol Color Run on Saturday. They helped with temporary tattoos, face paint, and games stations, and cheered on the runners.

Thanks to SADD adviser Laura Benjamin for her guidance and support.

Randolphville Elementary School families had a wonderful time at their inaugural Color Run, bringing together families, students, and staff for a day of school spirit, community, and fun! The event raised an amazing $17,000 for the Randolphville PTO!

The unforgettable day, where students ran through a course in the school yard while they were sprayed with colorful powder, was made possible through months of planning by the PTO board and volunteers and through numerous community sponsorships.
