Your home may have a lead service line which is the pipe that carries water to your home from the street. Under New Jersey law, lead and galvanized steel service pipes need to be identified and replaced by 2031. New Jersey American Water and its consulting engineer CDM Smith will be going door-to-door in Piscataway to perform in-home inspections of the service pipes to determine the material. They need your help!

For approximately two months starting this week, inspectors will canvass in our community. All inspectors will wear high visibility vests with New Jersey American Water and CDM Smith logos and will have New Jersey American Water-issued contractor ID badges. They will introduce themselves and ask to come inside to check the water service pipe where it enters your home which is typically in a basement or crawl space. The inspector will take exterior photos of your house and house number and interior photographs of the service pipe material and record on a tablet the identified pipe material. The inspection generally takes 15 minutes or less and at no time will you be asked for money.

Want to make sure the inspector coming to your home is legitimate? Ask the inspector to see his/her New Jersey American Water-issued contractor ID badge. The Piscataway Township Police Department will also have inspector information which you can verify by calling its non-emergency number (732) 562-1100.

Want to schedule an inspection? Visit calendly.com/njaw to get started. Have any questions about the inspection process? Email [email protected] or call (732) 590-4700.

The forecast is for Hurricane Isaias to bring its remnants to New Jersey with heavy rain starting Sunday. Here’s what you can do today!

Please help prevent flooding by keeping the storm sewer grates along your property free and clear of debris. If there are leaves covering the grates, please clean them off. That will allow better water flow into the storm sewers.

Also, remember that Piscataway Township places barriers before rain falls on roads where it is believed flooding may occur. Barriers can be wooden stands, maybe orange cones. Never remove a barrier or go around a barrier.

You may think it is safe to drive on a roadway that has been blocked off. It is not. You may think that your SUV can get through a flooded road. It cannot. Flood waters come without notice.

“A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult,” according to the National Weather Service. “It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a small car, while 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.”

What is worse is that some residents move the barriers on their own. Drivers that follow think that the road is safe. Residents should never remove barriers on their own. You are risking your life and the lives of others.

Even after flood waters recede, a washed out road can leave debris behind or disrepair to the street so always wait for officials to determine if the road is safe to drive.

If you see flooded waters, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Yesterday at N.J. Fire Convention Deputy Chief Brian C. Wahler, Firefighter My Do, along with members of River Road Fire Company & Possumtown Volunteer Fire Company, were honored with a Unit Citation Award for their courageous actions that helped save a life last year on July 14th during a water rescue on Possumtown Road.

During a severe flash-flooding storm, an approximately 75-year-old man became trapped in his vehicle beneath the Possumtown Road bridge as rapidly rising water surrounded his vehicle. With the floodwaters continuing to rise, the man climbed onto the roof of his minivan for safety.

The swiftwater rescue crew consisting of FF Do, Ex-Chief Schulack, Captain Wahler & LT Williams. The crew deployed a rescue boat and began making their way through waist-deep floodwaters toward the victim. FF Do & Schulack relocated the rescue truck to a better access location. As conditions deteriorated and progress became difficult, Captain Wahler requested a second boat, but Command advised that all other available boats were committed to other rescues.

The boat crew (Cpt. Wahler, LT. Williams) continued forward, at one point dragging the rescue boat over higher ground with assistance from a police officer before returning to the flooded roadway. Near the railroad bridge, floodwaters had risen to the tops of vehicle roofs.

The victim was located standing on only a small exposed portion of his minivan roof, approximately 2 feet by 2 feet, with the remainder of the vehicle submerged.
Ex-Chief Rob Gorr, positioned on the nearby railroad tracks, assisted in locating the victim and stood by with a rope bag as a last resort.

Captain Wahler & Lieutenant Williams maneuvered the rescue boat alongside the submerged vehicle and successfully removed the victim from the roof. The team then paddled back through the floodwaters to a safer, elevated area.

The victim reported that he had been standing on top of his vehicle for several hours and was extremely fatigued, but remained alert. He was then transported by EMS.

This Unit Citation recognizes the teamwork, courage, perseverance, and commitment to protecting our community demonstrated by everyone involved in this rescue. Thank you to N.J. Fire Chief Association for recognizing us.

25 years later, we remember. 🇺🇸

Today, we honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including the 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, 55 military personnel, and countless civilians whose lives were taken that day.

We remember those who ran toward danger when others were running away. We remember the first responders, service members, civilians, families, friends, and communities whose lives were forever changed.

And we remember those we have lost in the 25 years since. Thousands of first responders, recovery workers, survivors, and others exposed in the aftermath continue to suffer from cancers, respiratory diseases, and other 9/11-related illnesses. The toll of September 11 did not end on September 11, 2001, and people continue to lose their lives from its lasting effects today.

For those we lost that day.
For those we have lost since.
For those who continue to fight.

Honor. Remember. Never Forget. 🇺🇸
