Recent data from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network indicates that approximately two-thirds of active firefighters will face a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime, largely due to occupational exposure to toxins and carcinogens.

Dr. Carolyn Hardin, a dermatologist who treated Pittsboro Fire Training Captain David Reeves, noted that proactive screenings have evaluated 43 firefighters across the Caldwell, Pittsboro, Sanford, and Timberlake departments.

Captain Reeves shares his perspective on this critical issue:

The American Academy of Dermatology pushed for nationwide preventative screenings for firefighters.

Community outreach and fire safety education remain vital components of public service. Recently, members of our department had the privilege of visiting Lemon Drops Preschool to introduce young learners to fundamental fire safety practices.

During the visit, the children enjoyed meeting Sparky the Fire Dog, exploring the fire apparatus firsthand, and learning about firefighters' daily responsibilities in our community.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools
outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These
batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they
fail.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is
warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or
color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away
from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can
overheat and start a fire.

Pittsboro Fire was proud to get to participate in the Chatham County Touch a Truck event earlier this month. This family-friendly event brought families from across Chatham County together for a fun day of exploring trucks, emergency vehicles, and other vehicles up close. Families met the people who operate these vehicles, learned about the important work they do in our community, and enjoyed a hands-on experience for children!
