π Furnace Season Safetyπ₯
Know the difference between normal and dangerous smells. Hereβs what to watch for:
π Burning dust: A brief burnt smell can be normal as accumulated dust heats up and burns off. It should fade relatively quickly.
β οΈ Burning plastic or electrical odors: These may indicate an overheating component or electrical issue. Turn off the furnace and have it inspected by a qualified HVAC professional.
π¨ Rotten egg or sulfur smell: This may indicate a natural gas leak. Leave the home immediately. Once safely outside, call 911.
Remember: Carbon monoxide (CO) has no smell. Make sure your CO alarms are installed and working properly.
It is always best to have your furnace inspected and serviced by a qualified HVAC professional before the heating season to help ensure it operates safely and efficiently.
