If you enjoyed our Banned Books event yesterday, be sure to visit our friends at Pittsburg Public Library. 🄰

Public Libraries still face the majority of total challenges in the United States, so it’s more important than ever to show your support for the freedom to read!

Our outreach Librarian, Jorge Leon, will be presenting today at 3:30 pm in Axe 029 on recently challenged YA Books and how to advocate for intellectual freedom at your local library. We hope to see y’all there. 😃

Banned Books Week is officially on at Axe! šŸ“ššŸ”„

Check out our ā€œbook infernoā€ modeled after the Chicago public libraries’ attempt to keep books of questionable moral character in one place. But unlike in the early 20th century, these books can be checked out at any time, no questions asked. Curious about why these books were challenged? Check behind each of them to see a brief list of challenges throughout the years.

But wait, there more! Complete our banned book puzzle and guess what’s in these mysterious jars for a chance to win prizes.

Tomorrow, your friendly social media manager will be hosting a live reading of banned books in front of Axe at 10am. Grab a sticker and a bookmark, and try reading from a banned book yourself!

Happy Constitution Day! You might have noticed Pittsburg State University Student Government Association earlier today passing out donuts and talking about the Pittstate Student constitution. We also have mini constitutions available to grab for free throughout the library. These handy little booklets contain the full text of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence.

Civic engagement has a history here at Pitt State. Check out this SGA pamphlet from 1996 encouraging students to vote, and a variety of materials in our archive on the teaching and interpretation of the US Constitution. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Have you ever wondered just how much your librarians know? Our specialty is finding information, and with access to the internet and the suite of resources provided by Pitt State, we can find out quite a lot...

But every now and then, we want a real challenge--and that challenge can only come from you! Stop by the first floor of Axe Library next Tuesday evening and ask us questions. Questions should be appropriate (that means PG-13 or lower in rating), have a real answer, and not require us to find out any personal information.

If you manage to stump us, you'll have the privilege of being featured on this social media, with us cringing in anguish over being foiled. 😣 Think you got what it takes? (Also, there will be snacks.)

Whether it’s old manuscripts, rare books, photos of PittState past, or even samurai armor of uncertain origin, Special Collections and University Archives is chock full of history. Come down Monday to Friday, 8am -12pm and 1pm-5pm.

We’ll be retiring our exhibit on PittState Alumnus George Sweatt at the end of this month, so make sure to check it out. Just be sure to leave those snacks at home, as there’s no food or drink allowed in the archives.
