Strengthen Our Community 05/08/2025

Jesse Sharrard, Director of the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry states, "We are committed to providing food to everyone who comes to us in need. But as the need rises, so does the cost of meeting that promise. We spend more than $30,000 every month bringing in the more than 30,000 pounds that the families we serve rely on, and we anticipate that figure will rise in the months to come."

Food pantry helps hundreds in Pittsburgh prepare for Passover Seder 04/14/2025

Every year, the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry works to ensure that food insecurity is not a barrier for our community to observe Passover. The pantry provides Kosher jams, gefilte fish, fresh produce, matzo, matzo meals, cake mixes, and macaroons, so every family has what they need for the holiday.

The JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry received a generous donation from Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Oakland who has showed an incredible act of compassion. As part of their annual weekend of service, this spring, the women of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church organize a community service project that aims to make sure a child's special day is included with at least a birthday cake. Inspired by the idea of spreading joy with cake kits like Beverly Birthdays they have introduced their own Birthday Cake Kits.

The kits have so far been disbursed to parts of the Hill District and East End programs with all the essentials needed to celebrate a birthday. Each kit includes cake mix, frosting, candles, sprinkles and balloons ensuring that some children can experience the joy of a birthday celebration.

The initiative not only brings smiles to the faces of children but also fosters a sense of community and togetherness. Through their Birthday Cake Kits, they are not just providing food but also creating moments of happiness and memories that will last a lifetime.
