We are extremely proud of Dr. Laras Susanti who today successfully defended her SJD dissertation, Islamic Constitutionalism in a Multiconfessional State: The Indonesian Constitutional Court and the Marriage Law. Laras has worked very hard over the past four years, not only conducting research and writing this dissertation, but also participating in conferences and presenting guest lessons. In two weeks, she will present her research at the National SJD Roundtable at American University. Laras has been a constant delightful presence in the law library over the years and we will miss her very much when she returns to her job on the faculty at Universitas Gadja Mada. https://acadstaff.ugm.ac.id/Laras

"On March 8, 1971, four people broke into the FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania and stole more than 1,000 classified documents. It was the night of the “Fight of the Century” boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and most people, including the police, were absorbed in the live radio broadcast. The four burglars escaped with the documents unwitnessed, and were never caught. In the weeks that followed, documents were mailed anonymously to newspapers around the country from an organization calling itself the Citizens’ Commission to Investigate the FBI, revealing the existence of a secret illegal surveillance operation that the FBI was conducting against American citizens." Pitt Law advances its strategic expansion of endowed faculty positions this Women’s History Month with the establishment of the Roslyn M. Litman Endowed Professor of Law in Civil Liberties.

A key component of Pitt Law’s effort to bolster its national scholarly reputation and support world-class faculty, this endowed title honors a legendary alumna (JD ’52) who broke gender barriers and secured landmark U.S. Supreme Court victories.

“This endowed title honors Roz Litman’s extraordinary legacy and ensures that her commitment to civil liberties, constitutional advocacy, and justice will continue to inspire scholarship and teaching for generations to come,” said Dean Jerry Dickinson.

The endowed position will support a high-profile national scholar advancing civil rights and civil liberties scholarship.

The Barco Law Library has also launched a new digital exhibit highlighting Litman’s life and legacy through archival photographs, case materials, scholarship, and interviews.

Many Allegheny County families are facing uncertainty and fear because of U.S. immigration policy and enforcement. They have a variety of legal needs, including asylum applications; green card applications; advanced custody designations and powers of attorney; and federal habeas petitions, among other things.
