Do you remember the time HACP broke ground at its Northview Midrise & buried a time capsule for future generations to reflect on in 50 years?

Today was that day, and it sure was a celebration fit for the King of Pop himself.

The HACP was joined by Mayor Corey O'Connor , the City of Pittsburgh, Office of Councilman Bobby Wilson - Pittsburgh District 1, Northview Senior Tenant Council representatives Ms. Winnie Evans & Ms. Rochell Preston, HACP Commissioner Valerie McDonald Roberts, Fukui Architects, residents & stakeholders Monday to mark this historic development.

The long-awaited senior midrise along Penfort Street will replace the current high rise, built in the 1950s, in October 2027.

The celebration came full circle for Mayor O’Connor. His father, the late Bob O’Connor and former mayor, was a staunch supporter of the HACP and affordable housing.

“This is a great investment in the Northview Heights community,” said Mayor Corey O’Connor. “This has been home to many residents and families for decades and this new midrise building will provide new, accessible housing and create new opportunities for affordability in the City of Pittsburgh.”

Caster D. Binion, HACP executive director, said this process was a difficult one that dates back to 2015.

He thanked the HACP staff, community partners, Fukui Architects, the Richman Group, the city, and especially the residents for their help in bringing this vision to fruition.

Councilman Wilson recalled attending school in the neighborhood and now represents its residents in District 1.

“The HACP is providing better housing for the dignity of its residents and better real estate to help shape this community for years to come,” he said.

Ms. Winnie has lived at Northview since 1969, and recalls the early years of the development. She and Ms. Rochell are thankful for the midrise building and are excited to move into their new apartments once construction is complete.

Small items were then added to the time capsule and esteemed guests got their turn to mark history and bury it for future generations to discover.

Thank you all for sharing in this historic moment for the HACP, its stakeholders, residents, and the future of affordable housing!
