Today we say goodbye to our Long time member and 3 term Vicechair Mrs. Connie Wellons. We will miss her dedication, guidance and friendship. Thank you Mayor Gainey for your kind words.
Pittsburgh mourns today over the passing of Beltzhoover native Connie Wellons. Mrs. Wellons served her community and the City with distinction and honor as the first Black Woman Chair of Pittsburgh’s Human Relations Commissions for three terms over eighteen years and through her work with the NAACP. Her dedication to equity and our City has improved countless Pittsburghers’ lives; though she may no longer be with us, her legacy will continue to inspire others for years to come.
I am eternally thankful that the City could honor Mrs. Wellons in June when I joined Councilman Bruce Kraus to unveil “Wellons Way” in honor of her countless contributions. I have ordered the City of Pittsburgh flag at the City-County Building lowered to half-staff to mark this somber occasion. May her memory continue to be a blessing for all who knew and loved her.
