Today we honor the birthday of ✨ Asa Philip Randolph ✨ (1889–1979). His fight for justice, labor rights, and equality continues to inspire us all. Celebrate his legacy by learning more and taking action.
Randolph was a pivotal labor and civil rights leader who founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) in 1925, the first successful Black trade union. He also founded the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) in 1965, along with the Messenger magazine, the Negro American Labor Council, and the League for Nonviolent Civil Disobedience Against Military Segregation.

✨APR✨ is acknowledged as one of the greatest Black labor leaders in American History. Courage in the face of oppression defined Randolph’s life but he knew that justice and equality are at the core of a strong society.

✨ APR ✨ made the statement "In this period of power politics, nothing counts but pressure, more pressure, and still more pressure, through the tactic and strategy of broad, organized, aggressive mass action."
✊🏾 This pressure tactic was effective and President Franklin D. Roosevelt met with Randolph in June 1941, issued the Executive Order 8802 which banned discriminatory hiring practices in defense industries and created the Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC)
💬 Plan, act, and inspire. Randolph’s vision for tomorrow starts with us today. How are you showing up?

✨APR ✨ often utilized this phrase to emphasize the need for organization amongst African American workers.
The full famous quote is: "At the banquet table of nature, there are no reserved seats. You get what you can take, and you keep what you can hold. If you can't take anything, you won't get anything, and if you can't hold anything, you won't keep anything. And you can't take anything without organization"
Economic and social fairness weren’t just ideals, they were goals Randolph worked tirelessly for.

✨ APR ✨ frequently used this phrase during his activism, particularly around 1941 when organizing to desegregate defense industries. The quote highlights his belief that organized labor and collective action are necessary to achieve civil rights and economic justice.
💬 Randolph knew that lasting change comes from collective action. How are you empowering your community?
04/10/2026
This quote aligns with APR's documented lifelong philosophy regarding civic duty. From the workplace to the streets, Randolph believed in speaking up.
✨ Your voice matters. How will you stand up for yourself today?
04/09/2026
✨ APR said this on August 28th, 1963 during his address at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where he was the lead organizer and speaker.
💬 He reminded us that justice and freedom require courage and action. What will you fight for today?
