Here's the honest reason we're doing this.

Volunteer fire companies around here are running thinner than they used to. The calls haven't slowed down — the roster has. That's true at our station and it's true at every station around us.

So rather than just ask people to join, we figured we'd show you what it's actually like first.

Firefighter for a Day is Saturday, October 17. You'll wear the gear, breathe off an SCBA, take a door, and run a hose line — the same things we train on. No commitment and no pitch at the end. If you walk away thinking "not for me," that's a completely fine outcome. If you walk away still thinking about it, come find us.

A lot of our members started exactly this way. Curious, no experience, showed up once.

✅ Follow manufacturer instructions
✅ Use the correct charger
✅ Charge in a safe location
✅ Unplug when charging is complete

⚠️ YOUR BATTERY MAY BE TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING.

If a rechargeable device:

🔥 Gets unusually hot
🎈 Starts swelling
👃 Smells strange
💥 Makes popping or hissing sounds
💨 Starts smoking

STOP USING IT.

Don’t ignore the warning signs.

And if you see smoke or fire, get out and call 911.
Knowing what to look for could help you recognize a problem before it becomes a fire.

BEFORE YOU PLUG IT IN… CHECK IT

Ask yourself these questions:

☑️ Is this the correct charger?
☑️ Am I charging on a hard surface?
☑️ Is the device in a safe location?

NFPA recommends using the cord/charger supplied with the device or one approved by the manufacturer and charging on a hard, flat surface rather than beds, couches or pillows.

This week, we’re talking about something that can make a BIG difference long before we ever arrive on a fire call:

From phones and tablets to gaming devices, power tools, e-bikes and scooters, rechargeable batteries are everywhere.

And this week, we’re giving you simple things you can do at home to help keep your family safe.

AUGUST BY THE NUMBERS

Every month, we take a look back at the calls, hours, and events that kept our members busy. Here’s a look at August:

📟 85 calls for service
👨‍🚒 2.66 members responded per call
⏱️ 96.75 staffing hours completed by 7 members
🤝 93 community event hours completed by 11 members
🧯72 hours of training completed by 15 members
25.88 % of Calls were for Highland’s District and total of 81.18% of Calls being within the Town of McCandless.

Our top 5 call types were:

1️⃣ Commercial Fire Alarm — 18 calls
2️⃣ Residential Fire Alarm — 11 calls
3️⃣ High Life Hazard Fire Alarm — 7 calls
4️⃣ Residential Fire — 6 calls
5️⃣ Crash — Unknown Injury — 5 calls

Behind every one of these numbers are volunteers who answer the call, staff the station, train, attend events, and give their time to keep our community safer.

85 calls. Nearly 190 hours of staffing and community events. One volunteer department.

And we’re always looking for more people to join us.
