FIRSTIE FRIDAY: MIDN 1/c Sandeep Karunaratne is from Buffalo, NY and studies Geology with a minor in Arabic here at the University of Pittsburgh.

This semester he serves as our MIDN Company Commander and recently ship selected the USS George Washington out of Yokosuka, Japan as a SWO-METOC.

MIDN Karunaratne’s favorite memories from his time in our program have consistently come along with helping organize and run our annual Raible 5k event. He loves “seeing all the runners that show up and enjoy the event, showing that the hard work really does pay off.”

Congratulations to our very own MECEP Sgt Fuerst on promoting to the rank of Staff Sgt. We are grateful for everything he does for our unit.

Today at Lab, we welcomed the owner of , Major General Jones (Ret.) as our guest speaker. He taught us valuable lessons about leadership and gave us insight on how to become the best warrior we can be.

Our midshipmen endure detailed inspections periodically to instill discipline and attention to detail. We take pride in our appearance here at Steel City.

Congratulations to newly commissioned 2ndLt, Aaron Elm. He commissioned on December 13th, 2025 with a degree in philosophy and classics from the University of Pittsburgh. He will be attending TBS in June.
