Our office stands with the men and women of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia and with the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Logan Utt.

Friday night, Deputy Utt, along with another deputy, were asked to do a welfare check at a home in Cana, near the border with North Carolina. As they approached the residence, a suspect inside opened fire striking both deputies. Deputy Utt died at the scene from his injuries and the second deputy is in the hospital with his condition stable. The suspect in the shooting remains at large.

Deputy Utt joined the sheriff’s office in 2023 after serving in the military.😢

Pittsburgh PA ---- Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus announced today that a former standout basketball player at Schenley High School has been taken into custody for owing more than $100,000 in child support.

36-year-old DeAndre Kane has been a fugitive since 2023 when he failed to appear for a Family Couty hearing concerning the missed child support payments. Kane, who led Schenley High School to a City League basketball championship in 2008, has been playing professional basketball overseas for various teams since 2014.

Detectives from our office this week, with the assistance of the Allegheny County Police Department and the United States Department of State, developed information that Kane would be returning to Pittsburgh Friday from Iceland, where he currently resides while continuing his pro basketball career. Our detectives, accompanied by Allegheny County Police Department officers, went to Pittsburgh International Airport Friday and our detectives took Kane into custody as he disembarked his flight from Iceland.

Kane was subsequently transported to the Allegheny County Jail to await a hearing in Family Court.

As part of Memorial Day weekend, Sheriff Kraus and Chief Deputy Richard Manning were invited to take part in the pre-match festivities for the Pittsburgh Riveters soccer match Saturday night at FNB Stadium.

Sheriff Kraus delivered the match ball, and Chief Deputy Manning performed the national anthem prior to the match against Flower City 1872.

The Riveters were able to salvage a 3-3 draw when goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth, brought into the penalty area as an 11th attacker with extra time winding down, managed to find the back of the net from 15 yards out after a corner kick.

Big thanks to the Riveters organization for the invite and best of luck the rest of the way !

Sheriff Kraus was out and about on this Memorial Day including a trip down Butler Street in Lawrenceville to pay tribute to those in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. 🇺🇸

The order came through to go take the hill,
You summoned your strength, your courage, your will,

Off you went with your comrades all around,
“Let’s not stop boys, til we have the high ground.”

After just a few steps, you were in for a fight,
And in battle there are things that are stronger than might,

We’ll never know your final thoughts at the end,
Leaving a family behind, forever on the mend,

And you’ll never know the thanks and the pride,
That your country carries far and wide,

As time passes we will always find a way,
To honor your sacrifice on Memorial Day.🇺🇸

During today’s lunch hour, Sheriff Kraus and our deputies joined with Amy Brant and her crew from Allegheny County Veterans Services to distribute flags around the courthouse to help everyone kick off the Memorial Day weekend.

We distributed 576 flags and even our facility dog Lassen along with his handler deputy Emily Brunner joined in the effort.

This Memorial Day is part of the America 250 yearlong effort to recognize the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States and as always, much respect is given to the men and women in uniform who have, for the past 250 years, perished in defense of our flag and everything it represents.

Pittsburgh PA ---- Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus announced today that a Pittsburgh man with a history of fi****ms convictions has been taken into custody.

Since 2023, 24-year-old Deandre Williams has pleaded guilty on three different occasions to fi****ms related charges including carrying without a license and person not to possess. In March of this year, bench warrants were issued on all three cases for probation violations. Additionally, Williams has two active warrants out of the City of Pittsburgh charging him with domestic related simple assault involving two different women.

Detectives from our office this week developed information that Williams was inside of a residence on Benton Avenue in Brighton Heights. When detectives arrived at the home this morning, they were able to see Williams inside. A female then answered the door and confirmed that it was Williams inside of the house. Detectives then entered the house and located Williams in the dining room at which point he was arrested without incident and transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

On July 4th, the flag will be taken to Washington D.C. as part of the Independence Day festivities.🇺🇸

Each year, the ‘Be A Fan Law Enforcement Torch Run’ for Special Olympics may be the most rewarding three days for members of law enforcement in western Pennsylvania.
