Statement on the Passing of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Today, our nation has lost a giant in the fight for civil and equal rights. Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. was more than a leader of a movement, at a defining moment in American history, he was the embodiment of hope for an entire generation. His voice carried the aspirations of those long excluded from the promise of democracy, and his work helped reshape the political and moral landscape of this country.

Rev. Jackson challenged America to confront its conscience. Through the Rainbow Coalition and his historic presidential campaigns, he expanded the electorate, empowered marginalized communities, and insisted that the American dream must belong to all of us. He did not simply speak of justice, he organized for it, mobilized for it, and demanded it.

He lived long enough to witness what many once thought impossible: the election of President Barack Obama. For Rev. Jackson and so many others who marched, organized, and sacrificed, that moment represented a tangible realization of the dream , a testament to decades of struggle and perseverance. It affirmed that the barriers he fought to dismantle could, in fact, fall.

Yet Rev. Jackson also understood that progress is neither permanent nor guaranteed. In today’s political climate, as we confront deep division, rising intolerance, and what many view as a troubling erosion of moral leadership from the White House, his legacy calls us to renewed vigilance. He taught us that democracy requires active stewardship, moral courage, and an unwavering commitment to truth and equality, especially in times when those values feel under strain.

Rev. Jackson believed that hope was not passive; it was an action. His life reminds us that leadership must be rooted in principle, compassion, and accountability. As we mourn his passing, we also inherit his charge: to continue the work, to defend the rights of the vulnerable, and to insist that this nation live up to its highest ideals.

We want to extend our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and to all who were shaped by his leadership and inspired by his faith in justice. May we honor his life not only with remembrance, but with resolve.

Sincerely,

The B-PEP Planning Council

Dr. King’s Final Warning. Final Vision. Final Call.

In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. withdrew from the noise of the world, renting a quiet house in Jamaica, no telephone, no distractions, to write what would become his final book and most prophetic work.

Here, King delivers an unflinching analysis of American race relations and the state of the civil rights movement after a decade of struggle. But this was more than reflection, it was a blueprint for the future.

He speaks plainly about what justice truly requires:
✊🏽 better jobs
✊🏽 higher wages
✊🏽 decent housing
✊🏽 quality education

As Cornel West wrote:

“In this book, his last grand expression of his vision—he put forward his most prophetic challenge to the powers that be and his most progressive program for the wretched of the earth.”

Dr. King boldly declared that humanity already has the resources and technology to eradicate poverty, what’s missing is the will.

This message isn’t history. It’s a mirror.
And it’s still calling us forward.
