EMS Training Tuesday!

This week, we highlight the accomplishments of two new Motor Medics who have joined the EMS Cycle Unit. Congratulations to Paramedics William McHenry and Marlin Davis on becoming the newest members of the team!

The Cycle Team is an elite group of Paramedics who have completed a three-week intensive training course to ride fully ALS-capable Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Each Motor Medic completes an additional 40 hours of annual training every spring and summer in partnership with the Pittsburgh Police. This training takes place prior to the special events season, during which the team provides rapid, advanced care across many large-scale events.

The Cycle Unit is credited with multiple cardiac arrest saves due to their unique ability to efficiently navigate large crowds and provide advanced life support directly at the point of injury upon arrival.

Today, the City of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Public Safety Department, and the Bureau of EMS unveiled an outdoor, publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in Frankie Pace Park in the Lower Hill District.

The new ZOLL AED 3®, housed in a climate-controlled, outdoor SaveStation® Tower, will be accessible to the public 24/7. This empowers bystanders to begin lifesaving care during a sudden cardiac arrest before professional responders arrive.

The installation honors the legacy of Freedom House Ambulance Service and John Moon, one of its pioneering paramedics who later served as a leader within Pittsburgh EMS. Freedom House pioneered prehospital care, influencing EMS systems nationwide. The new AED extends that legacy from first responders to everyday people.

The outdoor AED and SaveStation Tower were donated by ZOLL Public Safety Medical, SaveStation, and the National CPR&AED Awareness March and Rally (part of Every Second Counts CPR) in partnership with the Bureau of EMS and Freedom House.

Pittsburgh EMS was proud to participate in a Touch-A-Truck event at the Therapeutic Early Autism Program (TEAP) in Pittsburgh, giving preschool children a chance to see an ambulance up close and connect with a local first responder.

Events like this create opportunities for positive, low-pressure introductions to emergency vehicles and the people who respond when help is needed.

One especially meaningful part of the visit was the handmade artwork from the children, thanking community helpers. Their colorful creations were proudly displayed on Pittsburgh EMS Medic 34.

For Pittsburgh EMS, serving the community extends beyond answering emergency calls. Outreach visits help build familiarity, trust, and understanding while celebrating the unique needs and strengths of the children and families we serve.

Thank you to the children and staff at TEAP for the warm welcome and thoughtful artwork. Pittsburgh EMS appreciates the opportunity to be part of your day.

EMS Training Tuesday!

Last week 8 Crew Chief's and Paramedics completed Passenger Vehicle Rescue Awareness-Operations-Technician training.

This group has been together for the past month completing hundreds of training hours in multiple rescue disciplines, to become a part of the Rescue Division.

Over the course of the week, this team completed extrication scenarios on 32 different vehicles!

This weekend, Pittsburgh EMS staffed football games at Acrisure Stadium on both Saturday and Sunday 🏈

On Saturday for the Pitt vs UNC game, our team of 18 Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians responded to 9 Emergency Calls, resulting in 4 patients being transported to area hospitals.

On Sunday for the Steelers vs Indianapolis game, our team of 25 Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians responded to 13 Emergency Calls, resulting in 3 patients being transported to area hospitals.

All patients treated and transported were in stable condition.

Special thanks to our regional partners; Rostraver EMS, Mon Valley EMS, Butler EMS, Collier EMS, Eastern Area Prehospital Services and Munhall Area Prehospital Services, who provided transport ambulances to support Stadium Operations throughout the weekend.
