As costs continue to rise for Pennsylvania families, we need to have serious conversations about how we fund the public services that keep our communities strong. That includes exploring ways to ensure billionaires and some of the largest corporations in the world pay their fair share, so we can invest in our schools, public transportation, infrastructure, housing, and other priorities that benefit all Pennsylvanians.

I was proud to join my collegauges and advocates from OnePA yesterday to call for a tax system that works for working people—not just the wealthiest corporations and individuals.

Following the decisions last night by the Pittsburgh Public Schools Board to close nine buildings, our focus must shift to getting this right for Pittsburgh's students and families. This transition must reflect the unique needs of every child, be responsive to the very real concerns raised by parents and communities and ensure equitable access to opportunities no matter a student's zip code or school assignment.

Student Achievement Center (Baxter School), Pittsburgh Friendship, Pittsburgh Schiller 6-8, Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8, Pittsburgh Fulton PreK-5, Pittsburgh McKelvy (Miller PreK-5), and Pittsburgh Woolslair PreK-5 will close at the end of the 2026-27 school year. Pittsburgh Spring Hill PreK-5 and Pittsburgh Morrow will close the following year, upon completion of the Northview PreK-5 renovation project.

While change of this scale is never easy, we have a responsibility to make sure this process builds a stronger, more supportive foundation for Pittsburgh Public Schools and delivers the resources, stability, and opportunities that every student deserves.

Pittsburgh Public Schools directors voted Wednesday to close nine school buildings, bringing to an end years of indecision and intense community pushback.

The board voted 6-2-1 to shutter the schools during their monthly legislative session at the district’s Oakland administration building, a decision many attributed to the district’s precarious financial position and years of declining enrollments.

Nine buildings will now permanently close at the start of the 2027-28 school year.

“Our work now is to move forward responsibly, thoughtfully and always with students at the center of every decision we make,” Superintendent Wayne Walters said.

Saw so many friendly faces (and yes—enjoyed a few sweet treats!) at Lawrenceville’s Memorial Day Parade this morning.

Today, we came together as a community to honor and remember the lives lost in service to our nation. These brave individuals made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, and we owe them a debt we can never fully repay.

As we soak up this sunny Pittsburgh afternoon, I hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on those who made it all possible.
