Today, June 6th, 2026, is the 82nd Anniversary of the allied invasion of Normandy. This British WWII-era helmet was recovered by sailor Carson Stauffer on board LCIL 499 on D-Day. Stauffer's ship helped transport British soldiers to Gold Beach, and he later found this helmet near the area where the British soldiers debarked. The helmet interestingly still has bit of camouflage burlap, called scrim, left on it. The scrim was meant to be thrown away, so we are lucky to some of it left on this helmet!

This artifact represents just a small portion of Seaman First Class Stauffer's story. Make sure to visit us soon to learn more about S 1/C Stauffer's service in this display dedicated to D-Day. And keep an eye our for the next look at our collection!

The two oak card catalogs in our collection are part of the original furniture purchased for the hall in 1910! The cabinets contain the informational cards for all 25,000 Civil War veterans listed on the bronze plaques that line the museum's walls! Before a veteran could be listed on their company's plaque, they had to submit their name, regiment, and company. Most of the cards only have that information, but a few, like the card for Corporal Albert Scott shown in this video, list a few other bits of information!

The catalogs are not currently on view to the public, but researchers are able to make an appointment with our museum team to access the cards.

Keep an eye out for our next look at our collection!

This piece of furniture used to be crucial or orderly record keeping, but is now rarely used. Two are still used here at Soldiers & Sailors for a specific purpose that has to do with the walls of our museum.
