Thank you to TribLive for visiting Turtle Creek yesterday as United States Steel Corporation presented a donation to our VEX Robotics program prior to our third grade competition.
We appreciate the coverage and sharing the impact of the program to the region!
Woodland Hills students find success, resiliency with STEAM, robotics programming Elementary students in the Woodland Hills School District are learning more than how to build and program robots — they’re learning resilience, teamwork and how to push through frustration. In the program’s first year, students often cried or gave up when they struggled to successf...

Third graders from Edgewood STEAM Academy, Turtle Creek STEAM Academy - Woodland Hills School District, and Wilkins Elementary STEAM Academy wrapped up the annual district wide elementary VEX Robotics competition on Thursday.
Despite this being our youngest group of competitors, the students really showcased some impressive skills! They piled up points during the two-minute coding portion of the competition, which left them more time to get additional points during the two-minute driving segment. Of course, there were challenges they had to overcome - robot malfunctions, surprising results to their coding, and more. That's one of the purposes of this experience, however, and it's exciting to see how students innovate, collaborate, and adapt to overcome the challenges.
Three teams also had a unique component to their competitions. One team from each school was testing out a remote control to pilot their robots instead of using their Chromebooks. Thanks to the VEX Robotics team for trusting our students to test out the remote controls and providing feedback.
Once each school whittled down its teams to a final representative, it was a team from Mrs. Pearsick's class at Edgewood that took home the title!
Congratulations to our winning team and all of our competitors. This brings a fantastic year of VEX Robotics to a close. We can't wait to see what unfolds next year! Whsdvex

The Woodland Hills School District is honored to be the recipient of a generous donation from the United States Steel Corporation and the Edgar Thomson Plant to help support the district's competitive robotics teams that recently returned from the 2026 VEX Robotics World Championships in St. Louis.
The donation from U.S. Steel and the Edgar Thomson Plant was presented to the district and members of the sixth-grade Robotic Wolverines on Thursday, May 28 prior to the district -wide third grade robotics competition at Turtle Creek Elementary STEAM Academy. Chris Hannigan, the Plant Inventory Manager at the Edgar Thomson Works, presented the check for $11,000 to Woodland Hills School District Acting Superintendent Dr. Jean Livingston, Director of STEAM and Innovation Tina Dietrich, and the team members.
The Woodland Hills School District is proud to have forged a rapidly growing partnership with Mr. Hannigan, U.S. Steel, and the Edgar Thomson Works throughout the 2025-26 school year. Alongside the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Mr. Hannigan and U.S. Steel helped support the STEM Literacy nights held at all three elementary schools in the second half of the school year. Each school received books to add to their respective libraries, and participating students all went home with a new book to read.
Woodland Hills expresses its sincere thanks to Mr. Hannigan, U.S. Steel, and the Edgar Thomson Plant for their support, and the district looks forward to continuing the partnership next year and beyond. Whsdvex

The final results of the annual district wide elementary VEX Robotics competition are secondary to the life lessons learned by students. After all, not every student who uses the robotics kits as part of the regular curriculum will go into a STEM field when they graduate from high school.
No matter their path in life, however, they will need to be able to effective communicators. They will need to problem solve, sometimes in a creative way. They will need to work as members of a team and sometimes put aside their personal preference of how to do something in favor of the way that works best for all involved.
Wednesday's competition featuring students from the fourth grade classes at Edgewood STEAM Academy, Turtle Creek STEAM Academy - Woodland Hills School District, and Wilkins Elementary STEAM Academy
was a great example of those traits being learned in real time. Robots malfunctioned. Code didn't work as planned. Teammates were absent. But the students adapted, learning some valuable lessons along the way.
The fourth grade teams competed within their schools first, followed by a showdown between the top team from each of the three elementary schools. The competition features two minutes of coding followed by two minutes of driving, all in a quest to complete as many tasks and score as many points as possible. Ms. Spinogatti's class from Edgewood had the winning team, which ended up being a student who had to unexpectedly fly solo. It was an tight, emotional finish, with lots of happy hugs for our winner.
Congratulations to our winner and all of our competitors. Thanks to all of our volunteers and guest judges for their help, including Board President Ms. Karen Lyons. Third grade wraps up our annual event on Thursday. Whsdvex

The annual district wide elementary VEX Robotics competition is off and running! Tuesday was the fifth grade competition featuring classrooms from Edgewood STEAM Academy, Turtle Creek STEAM Academy - Woodland Hills School District, and Wilkins Elementary STEAM Academy inside the Turtle Creek gym.
Students have two minutes to use code that they input into their Chromebooks to direct their robot through the course to complete tasks. Each completed task rewards them with points. After two minutes of coding, the students then have two additional minutes to manually drive their robot around and complete additional tasks.
The competition challenges the students to be creative, to problem solve - especially when something happens to their code or their robots during the two minute time period - and to communicate with their teammates.
One team from each school with the highest score advances to the final, where the three school representatives face off against each other to rack up as many points as possible. Fifth grade went down to the wire and required an extra two-minute tiebreaker between a team from Edgewood and a team from Turtle Creek. Ultimately, a team from Ms. Fascetti's class at Edgewood won the day!
Congratulations to our winning team and all of our competitors. Fourth grade is up next on Wednesday. Whsdvex
