Evaluate what changes you need to make at home during this Red Flag Warning and Public Safety Power Shutoff to improve your household readiness.
• Prepare power: Charge phones and backup batteries. Identify essential equipment that requires electricity, including medical devices.
• Plan for heating: Keep blankets and warm clothing ready. Never use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
• Prepare food: Keep shelf-stable food that does not require cooking or refrigeration. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed during an outage.
• Store water: Maintain an emergency water supply and follow any local boil-water or safety advisories.
• Cook safely: Use generators, grills, and camp stoves only outdoors and away from combustible materials and vegetation; keep generators at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents.
• Know your route: Review evacuation routes, prepare a go-bag and plan where you will go—including arrangements for pets. DO NOT EVACUATE TO THE SWANSBORO AIRPORT UNLESS DIRECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT.
• Watch for hazards: Stay away from downed power lines, flooded roads and damaged trees.
Follow official closure and evacuation instructions.
Check on neighbors—especially older adults, people with disabilities, and anyone who may need help understanding current conditions. Share verified information, exchange contact information, and discuss how you can support one another during an evacuation or extended outage. Being neighborly is part of your preparedness plan and helps build a stronger, more resilient community.
