Sadly, I said my official goodbye to the South Florida Regional Planning Council this week. It has been an honor to work alongside the dedicated public servants - both elected and professional staff - at the SFRPC for the past three years. We have addressed regional issues on mobility, resiliency, affordable housing, job creation, waste generation and so much more. I am incredibly proud of the Silver Linings event we hosted in the City of Plantation last year to address concerns facing our senior community; that event was a direct offshoot of SFRPC's successful Silver Tsunami symposium at FAU.

In addition to addressing regional planning issues, the SFRPC offers several programs to spur economic development and I am pleased that a few of our businesses in Plantation have taken advantage of the council's low-interest revolving loans to reinvest in their businesses' success.

While I decided it was time to step away from this particular seat at the table, I will continue to engage with the Council on those regional issues which could directly benefit the City of Plantation. Thank you to Executive Director Isabel Cosio Carballo, her dedicated staff, legal counsel Sam Goren, and my fellow council members for the wonderful years of collaboration, and the lovely send-off. It was truly a pleasure and honor to serve with you all.

Today we cut the ribbon on another small business in the City: Welcome, Pilates of Plantation ! Tanya, the owner of the studio, has been teaching for 21 years and is excited to bring her love of Pilates to newcomers and devotees, alike (Council Member Jennifer Andreu and I were already checking out the equipment!). We wish Tanya and her team much success and hope you will check out the studio, which is located next to Helena’s Coffee in the The Fountains.

Yesterday, Adam Payne of Freebee and I conducted an app training for residents of Lauderdale West who were interested in learning more about our free ride service. The City Council was intentional in its desire to expand service into our 55+ communities and when you hear the resident's stories you understand why this was so important.

One resident said the availability of the accessible van will be "life- changing" for her, as she cannot easily (nor safely) get her handicapped husband into her personal car. She was excited when I showed her that Freebee can now take her and her husband to one of her favorite places, Plantation Diner!

Since launching the expansion in July, we have seen ridership nearly double from 1749 to 3394 rides in just one month. The bulk of drop-offs are still focused in the Midtown Business District, although we are seeing some hot spots developing along Sunrise Blvd, SR 7 and Broward Blvd (around 70th).

Congratulations to the the Kiwanis Club of Plantation on their 60th Anniversary, and thank you for all you do for Plantation students!
Grateful, as well, for the work of the The Greater Fort Lauderdale Diaper Bank and Feeding South Florida who serve so many in our community when they are most in need.
Finally, it was an emotional evening for Shak's Hope Foundation Executive Director (and Plantation resident) Andrea Hall, as she accepted a proclamation for Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Andrea lost her daughter, Shakira, ten years ago to SCD and it is her life's mission to build awareness - and encouraging testing - for Sickle Cell Disease. Check out all of their pages.
