You've probably heard that there are some changes coming to the Veterans Property Tax Exemption starting October 2026, but we've also heard a lot of misconceptions about the new law that we'd like to clear up. All of the following information has been given to us and explained by state lawyers and lawmakers:

1. The new law allows for veterans that are VA Rated 100% Permanently and Totally Disabled to have a total exemption of their property taxes.

2. This new law does not apply to people with TDIU (Individual Unemployability) even if they're labeled as permanent and total. Veterans who fall under this category will continue to receive their Alternative Veterans Exemption at the same rate as usual.

3. This new law is NOT a statewide mandate. Every municipality will have to choose if they are going to accept this exemption. The best place to check in on who will be accepting the exemption is with your town and county assessors.

4. A surviving spouse will be able to carry this exemption forward after the veteran passes away.

5. As this is not a statewide mandate, school districts will have to decide if they want to accept it and how much they're willing to exempt - as they currently do with the Alternative Veterans Tax Exemption.
