Do you know how to properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries? ๐Ÿ”‹

These batteries power our phones, laptops, earbuds, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, vapes and more. When they end up in household trash or recycling bins, they can start fires that can cause injury and significant damage.

Here's what to do:

โœ… Normal battery: Tape the terminals, keep it away from metal and other batteries, and take it to Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) or an authorized recycler.
โš ๏ธ Damaged battery: Don't use, charge or open it, and don't put it in a bin. Keep away from it and call HHW at 800-606-6606.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Smoke or fire: Leave the area. Get out, stay out and call 9-1-1.

๐Ÿ“ Free drop-off for Alameda County residents:
Alameda County HHW, 5584 La Ribera Street, Livermore
Thursday and Friday 9:00 AMโ€“2:30 PM, Saturday 9:00 AMโ€“4:00 PM
More drop-off locations: call2recycle.org/locator

๐Ÿš’ Please don't bring batteries to a fire station. Fire stations do not accept batteries for disposal or recycling.

๐Ÿ”‹โšก It's Fire Prevention Week! โšก๐Ÿ”‹

This year's theme from NFPA is "Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!"

Phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters and power tools all run on lithium-ion batteries. If one is damaged or charged the wrong way, it can overheat and start a fire. A few simple habits help:

โœ… Use the charger that came with your device
โœ… Charge on a hard surface, not a bed or couch
โœ… Unplug once it's fully charged
โœ… Stop using a battery that's hot, swollen, smoking or smells strange
โœ… Charge e-bikes and scooters outside and away from exits

๐Ÿš’ Happy Fire Prevention Week! ๐Ÿš’

When people think of firefighting, they often picture engines and emergency response. Some of the most important fire protection work, though, happens long before a 911 call.

This week we want to recognize our Fire Prevention team and the fire safety inspectors who work behind the scenes to keep Livermore and Pleasanton safe.

Every day, they:
๐Ÿ” Inspect businesses, schools and multi-family housing
๐Ÿ“ Review building plans so new construction meets fire codes
๐Ÿงฏ Make sure fire alarms, sprinklers and extinguishers are ready to work
๐Ÿก Help residents and businesses understand how to prevent fires

Their work rarely makes headlines, because when prevention works, nothing happens. Fires that never start mean families, homes and businesses that stay safe.

Thank you to our Fire Prevention team for all you do! ๐Ÿงก

๐Ÿ“… Save the date! Join us at our Fire Safety Expo this Saturday, October 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the LPFD Fire Training Grounds.

Come meet our team and learn how to keep your family safe.

โค๏ธโ€๐ŸฉนLPFD Engine 99 - Patient / Crew Reunion โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Recently, a patient had the opportunity to reunite with the first responders who were part of her lifesaving 9-1-1 response, including the dispatcher who answered the call, LPFD firefighters, and Falck paramedics who transported her to the hospital.

Her story is a powerful example of how the 9-1-1 system works together from the very first call.
When 9-1-1 was dialed, the dispatcher quickly recognized the seriousness of the emergency and provided CPR instructions over the phone. A bystander followed those directions and began chest compressions while firefighters and paramedics were responding.

LPFD crews arrived and took over patient care, providing advanced lifesaving treatment before working alongside Falck paramedics to continue that care and transport the patient to the hospital.

The 9-1-1 cycle starts with the person who makes the call. It continues with the dispatcher providing critical pre-arrival instructions, the firefighters and paramedics responding to the scene, and our ambulance and hospital partners continuing the patient's care.

๐Ÿ”—Every link matters.

*In an emergency, call 9-1-1, stay on the line, and follow the dispatcher's instructions. Those instructions can help save a life before first responders even arrive.
