October is fire prevention month, and this is one of our favorite times of the year. Last week we went to the grammar schools and showed the children fire safety measures and demonstrated some of our equipment. Tonight is our fire prevention open house. The firehouse is at 1 Passaic Avenue and will be open to the public from 6 PM until eight PM, and all are welcome. We have some special treats for the children ( and maybe adults too) who can use a hose and learn about fire prevention. We also have some food and drink. Please join us tonight and have a little fun while learning some important things that you can do to keep your home safe.

It is a busy week for the PLVFD. We started today with our annual Fire Safety program at our grammar schools. Today was Lincoln School, K- 2nd grade, tomorrow it is Lenox School. Today, just after returning from Lincoln School, we were toned out to the new Meridia residential building on Wanaque Ave.
The PLPD reported that a ventilation unit on the fourth floor caught fire and created a dense smoke condition. Residents were evacuated. Not knowing for sure whether the fire spread beyond the original location, mutual aid requests were ordered and several surrounding towns responded. The fire was extinguished and the heavy smoke ventilated, resulting in only minor damage to the building. Wanaque Ave. was closed by the PLPD for a time to keep all safe. PLVFD thanks our fellow first responders, including the PLPD, PLRFAS, Pequannock FAS, Riverdale FD, Wanaque FD, Oakland FD, Wayne Co 3, Bloomingdale FD, Haledon FD and W Milford Fire Co 4. This was another example of the very responsive mutual aid system, and helps assure the best response to our emergencies.
Monday was our monthly department meeting, Tuesday was a special meeting and next Monday is our annual Open House. See other posts for details on the open house.

Dangerous storm approaching - be mindful of the wind and rain. Follow the borough Office of Emergency Management posts and do not drive through flooded streets. Also, if your power goes out and you use a generator, please see notes below to avoid fires or illness. Generators provide electricity but also produce carbon monoxide, a silent killer. If you have any emergencies, call Borough Police Dept. on 9-1-1. Above all, be careful and be safe.

Remembering all who perished on that fateful day, and those that suffered afterwards. Please join us at 630 PM at the municipal building to once again commemorate that day, and especially to remember the 343 men and women of the fire service who gave all.

On August 4th, PLPD hosted National Night Out for our town. PLVFD was happy to participate in this event. Many thanks to our fellow first responders at PLPD for hosting this fun and educational event. PLVFD set up a pumper and tower ladder and established a light fog stream to cool off young and old. We also had members present to answer any questions about fire prevention. We are always happy to participate in events for our town and we hope you all enjoyed this annual event.
