What a perfect way to wrap up our Fire Prevention Week! Today, we welcomed the wonderful Kindergartners from Perrin Early Learning Center for our final school visit of the week.

The kids arrived in style on the school bus and jumped right into learning how to stay safe. We practiced "Stop, Drop, and Roll," guided them safely through our smoke room, showed them the heavy gear we wear to fight fires, and even let them get hands-on with the fire hose! πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’πŸ‘©β€πŸš’

Since we are talking about fire prevention, here are a few quick tips to review with your family at home tonight:

πŸ”₯ Stop, Drop, and Roll: If your clothes ever catch fire, don't run! Stop, cover your face with your hands, drop to the ground, and roll back and forth until the fire is out.
πŸ’¨ Get Low and Go: Smoke rises, so the cleanest air is close to the floor. Crawl on your hands and knees if you need to escape a smoky room.
🏠 Know Two Ways Out: Make sure everyone in your home knows two escape routes from every room and has a designated meeting spot outside.
🚨 Test Your Alarms: Check your smoke detectors every single month and change the batteries at least once a year.

Thank you to the students, teachers, and chaperones for being such a fantastic group. We love teaching our community's youngest heroes how to stay fire-safe!

πŸŠπŸš’ GATOR FIELD TRIP SUCCESS! πŸš’πŸŠ

Our Tucker Elementary 2nd Grade Gators had an incredible, hands-on learning experience this morning! In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the students took a walking field trip to visit our amazing friends at the Central Fire Station.

Our little Gators became safety experts today! They practiced:

β€’ πŸ›‘ Stop, Drop, and Roll – Mastered the essential steps for an emergency.
β€’ πŸ”₯ Fire Safety Tips – Learned how to spot hazards and stay safe at home.
β€’ πŸ’¨ The Smoke Room – Experienced navigating through low visibility safely.
β€’ πŸ’§ The Fire Hose – Got some real, hands-on experience handling the heavy hose!

The absolute highlight of the presentation was getting to meet the one and only Patches the Pumper! πŸš’πŸš’πŸš’πŸš’πŸš’πŸš’

🌟 Way to go, Gators! We want to give a huge shout-out to all of our second graders. They did a fantastic job staying focused, paying close attention, and asking great questions. We are so proud of how seriously they took learning about fire safety today!

Today we welcomed the energetic 4th graders from D.C. Reeves Elementary School to Ponchatoula Fire Department Central Station for an exciting, hands-on field trip focused on life-saving fire safety skills!

The students had an action-packed day learning exactly what it takes to stay safe and what our firefighters do every day. Here is a recap of what we covered:

β€’ Fire Safety Fundamentals: We went over the essential rules of fire prevention, creating home escape plans, and the importance of "Stop, Drop, and Roll."

β€’ The Smoke Room Challenge: The 4th graders practiced staying low and crawling under heat and smoke in our specialized smoke simulator room to learn how to safely navigate a burning building.

β€’ Apparatus & Turnout Gear: The kids got an up-close look at our fire engines and the heavy personal protective equipment (PPE) firefighters wear, helping them understand that firefighters are there to help and shouldn't be feared in an emergency.

β€’ Modern Hazards: We wrapped up with a highly important discussion on lithium-ion battery safety, teaching the students how to safely handle, charge, and respect devices like phones, tablets, and e-bikes.

What a fantastic experience for the kids! Building those positive, hands-on memories with firefighters early on makes a massive difference in how children react during a real emergency.

Key Takeaways from the "Smoke Room" & Fire Safety Demos:

The skills the Strawberry Castle green and red bears practiced today are exactly what safety experts recommend for early childhood fire education:

β€’ Stop, Drop, and Roll: This muscle memory is crucial. Children often instinctively want to run if their clothes catch fire, so practicing the physical motion helps override that panic.

β€’ Crawling Through the "Smoke Room": Teaching kids to "get low and go" saves lives. It helps them understand that the cleanest air is closest to the floor and demystifies what a dark, smoky environment actually feels like.

β€’ Handling the Fire Hose: Beyond being the ultimate highlight for the kids, handling the equipment builds trust. It helps children view firefighters as helpful heroes rather than scary figures in heavy, loud gear.

β€œPonchatoula Vol. Fire Dept. Urges You to: Charge Into Fire Safetyβ„’! Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Fire Prevention Week 2026: October 4–10

⚑ CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETYβ„’: Safe Charging Is a Superpower
Our smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, and scooters keep us connected, but their lithium-ion batteries require smart habits to prevent dangerous fires.
Use your superpower to protect your home and family with these essential tips from PVFD:

πŸ”‹ Smart Charging Safety Tips
β€’ Use Original Chargers: Only use the charging cord and adapter that came with your device or a manufacturer-approved replacement.
β€’ Charge on Hard Surfaces: Keep devices off beds, couches, and pillows. Always charge them on a flat, hard, and well-ventilated surface.
β€’ Unplug When Full: Disconnect your electronics once they reach 100% capacity to avoid overheating the battery.
β€’ Clear the Exit Paths: Never charge large items like e-bikes or hoverboards near your home's main doors or escape routes.
β€’ Watch for Warning Signs: Stop using any battery that swells, leaks, smells strange, changes color, or feels excessively hot.

🏠 Essential Home Protection
β€’ Test Every Month: Press the test button on your smoke alarms monthly to ensure they are working properly.
β€’ Plan Two Ways Out: Create and practice a home fire escape plan so everyone in your family knows two exits from every room.
β€’ Keep a Clear Path: Ensure windows and doors are completely free of clutter for a fast escape during an emergency.

πŸš’ In an emergency, always call 911 immediately.

πŸŽ†πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ 4th of July Safety Tips from Your Friends at Ponchatoula Fire Department πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŽ†

We’d rather see your fireworks on Facebook than see you at 2 a.m. πŸš’πŸ˜‚

πŸ”₯ 4th of July Survival Guide:

* If the firework says β€œRun”… believe it.
* Sparklers are NOT lightsabers. (Sorry, kids… and adults.)
* Keep a bucket of water nearbyβ€”for the fireworks, not Uncle Larry.
* Don’t hold fireworks in your hand unless your life goal is to have nine fingers.
* The grill is for burgers and hot dogsβ€”not flip-flops.
* Adult beverages and fireworks mix about as well as cats and bathtubs.
* If you can hear someone say, β€œWatch this!”… it’s probably time to take a few steps back.
* Keep pets indoors. They don’t celebrate freedom by sounding like fireworks.
* When you’re done, soak used fireworks in water before tossing them away.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Have fun, celebrate responsibly, and help us enjoy the holiday from the stationβ€”not your driveway.

From all of us at Ponchatoula Fire Department, have a safe and Happy 4th of July! πŸŽ‡πŸš’
