It's National Farm to School month! We are proud to partner with the Port Angeles School District on their Farm to School program, which brings fresh food- grown by farmers within our community- into school meals. This month, school salad bars have been stocked with locally grown produce such as carrots, tomatoes and lettuce from Chi's Farm as well as basil, broccoli and cucumbers from Wild Edge Farm.
School meals are not the only place where students are eating fresh and local produce, though: our garden based educator works with teachers and students across the Port Angeles School District in their school gardens to grow, harvest and taste fresh foods this Fall. Students at Roosevelt, Dry Creek, Franklin and Jefferson elementaries are enjoying Stone Soup with school garden-grown veggies this month, while students in the PA High School garden club are making garden-grown tomato sauce.
🌱🥕 From local farms to school cafeterias! 🥗🍅
Our Farm to School Program, in partnership with Washington State University Extension and WSU Clallam County, is officially in its third year of connecting students with fresh, locally grown food AND hands-on learning!
Through the program, students across our district participate in garden-based STEM and social-emotional learning while also getting to enjoy seasonal foods grown right here on the North Olympic Peninsula. 💚
Last year, our cafeterias featured produce from local growers including Chi’s Farm and River Run Farm in Sequim and Red Dog Farm in Chimacum—from salad greens and broccolini to carrots, potatoes, beets and more! 🚜🌿
Thanks to WSU Extension and Washington State grant funding, that work continues this year through the North Olympic Harvest of the Month program, bringing seasonal produce from farms throughout Clallam and Jefferson counties to our menus and salad bars.
