Officials from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) recently visited our Transition to Kindergarten classrooms at Roosevelt and Dry Creek elementary schools.
In addition to fulfilling a legislative requirement, the visits provided an important opportunity for OSPI officials to see our classrooms in action and ask questions directly of the educators who serve our youngest learners each day.
PASD believes strongly in the value of Transition to Kindergarten. While state funding reductions have affected TK programs across Washington, our district leaders and Board of Directors recognize that investing in early learning is one of the best things we can do for children. Together, they worked to maintain as many seats available as possible, as we know these programs help qualifying 4-year-olds build confidence, independence, friendships, and foundational academic and social-emotional skills- preparing them to enter kindergarten ready to learn.
Thank you to Miss Cobb and Miss Hoefler for welcoming us into their classrooms and sharing the meaningful work taking place for students and families! πŸ’š

🌟 Principal Spotlight: Britney Martin | Franklin Elementary
Last, but certainly not least, we're wrapping up our National Principals Month Spotlight series with Franklin Elementary Principal Britney Martin! πŸ’š
For Britney, one of the best parts of being a principal is the people. She loves working alongside students, staff, and families toward a common goal, embracing the challenges each day brings, and watching students learn and grow.
Britney's passion for education is rooted in her own experiences as a student. She remembers teachers who took the time to build relationships with her and made her feel seen, heard, and valued. Today, she works to create that same sense of belonging for every student at Franklin.
That commitment is also reflected in the Franklin team's work with Neural Education, exploring how understanding the brain and the science of learning can help educators better support students. Through this work, Britney and the Franklin staff are building on their understanding of how students learn, regulate emotions, build relationships, and develop the skills they need to succeed. It's another example of Franklin's commitment to meeting students where they are and helping them thrive! πŸ§ πŸ’š
Outside of school, Britney loves spending time with her family, hiking, and exploring great places to eat. Her friends and family describe her as high-energy, positive, and a problem-solver - qualities she brings to the Franklin community every day.
Thank you, Mrs. Martin, for your leadership, enthusiasm, and dedication to helping every Franklin student feel valued, supported, and ready to learn!
πŸ’š As we wrap up National Principals Month, we'd also like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to ALL of our PASD principals and assistant principals. Your leadership, care, and commitment to students help make our schools places where children can learn, grow, and thrive. We're grateful for everything you do!

βš“ Exploring Careers, Building Skills, and Discovering What's Next! πŸ”§
Our Port Angeles High School Skilled and Technical Sciences students recently traveled to the Kitsap County Fairgrounds for the Core Plus Maritime "Try-A-Trade" Day, where they got a firsthand look at the many career opportunities available in the skilled trades!
Students rolled up their sleeves and explored a variety of hands-on experiences, including trying out maritime immersion suits, building electrical circuits, climbing into big rigs to explore commercial driving careers, and much more!
One of the most important things we can do for students is help them see the possibilities for their futures. That's also at the heart of our district's Science of Hope initiative, which emphasizes the importance of having goals, identifying pathways to reach them, and believing in your ability to succeed.
Experiences like Try-A-Trade bring those ideas to life. By connecting classroom learning with real-world careers, students can discover interests they may not have considered, explore different pathways after graduation, and begin imagining what their own futures could look like.
πŸ’š When students can see a pathway forward, they can begin to see themselves succeeding. That's what building hope is all about, and we're proud to provide experiences that help our students learn, grow, and thrive!

🌟 Principal Spotlight: Mace Gratz | Port Angeles High School
Next up in our Principal Spotlight series is PAHS Interim Principal Mace Gratz, who has spent more than a decade serving students and families across Port Angeles School District! πŸ’š
For Mace, one of the best parts of being a principal is working alongside smart, creative, and dedicated people to develop new opportunities for students. He's inspired by his family, colleagues, and especially the students he works with- who sometimes have a way of reminding him why he chose education in the first place.
In fact, one morning when Mace jokingly questioned why he'd chosen a career that required waking up so early, a student offered a pretty powerful reminder: "It's because it's a gift. You're helping the future every day." πŸ’š
Mace's own educational journey was shaped by a teacher who saw his potential even when his grades didn't necessarily reflect it. Mr. Sutton, a high school teacher who welcomed Mace into his classroom for conversations about philosophy, books, history, and poetry, encouraged him to join the Marines and later attend a small college in New Mexico to study the classics. Mace did both! It's a reminder of the lasting difference an educator can make by building relationships and believing in students.
Outside of school, Mace enjoys sailing, home improvement, and building projects. And here's a fun fact you might not expect: He knows how to swing dance!
His friends and family describe him as dependable and crafty - qualities that certainly come in handy both in school leadership and when tackling his next project!
Thank you, Mr. Gratz, for your humor, creativity, and commitment to helping students find their own paths! πŸ’š

πŸ“š Focused on Student Success Across PASD!
On Friday, the Port Angeles School District Board of Directors heard from our school principals as they shared their School Improvement Plans and the goals, strategies, and priorities guiding their work this school year.
These plans reflect the unique needs of each school community and a shared commitment to helping every student learn, grow, and thrive.
Board members also heard updates from our middle and high school principals, received the latest information on our ongoing capital projects, and discussed other important work happening across the district.
We're grateful to our school leaders for their thoughtful planning, dedication to continuous improvement, and commitment to creating opportunities for every student.
Great things are happening across PASD, and we're excited about the work ahead! πŸ’š

βš“πŸš’ Learning Beyond the Classroom: Exploring the Port of Port Angeles! πŸ’š
Port Angeles High School students in the Core Plus Maritime program recently took their learning into the community with a visit to the Port of Port Angeles!
Students had the opportunity to discover just how much the Port does for our region, from managing marine terminals and marinas to overseeing airports, supporting local industries, and creating opportunities for economic growth throughout Clallam County.
With more than 100 years of history, the Port of Port Angeles plays an important role in connecting our community to the world while supporting local businesses, jobs, and industries.
For our students, experiences like these help connect classroom learning to real-world applications and introduce them to the many career pathways available right here in our own backyard! βš“
πŸ‘ A big thank you to the Port of Port Angeles for welcoming our Roughriders and helping them see the incredible opportunities that exist in our community!

Safely disposing of old, expired, or unused medications helps prevent accidental poisonings and reduces the risk of medications getting into the wrong hands, including those of children and teens.
πŸ’š Our students' safety extends beyond the classroom. By taking small steps at home, we can all play a role in creating a safer, healthier community for our kids.
