🇺🇸 Breakfast with the Brave! 🇺🇸 What a special morning we shared at this month's Heroes Breakfast.

There is something so meaningful about gathering around the table to honor the men and women who have served our country — sharing breakfast, conversation, stories, and the kind of camaraderie that makes these mornings so memorable.

Today, we had the privilege of recognizing First Lieutenant John Darryl DeGroot as our Veteran of the Month.

John served our country with pride during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971 as a First Lieutenant with the Armed Forces Vietnam Network, using his gifts in radio and television broadcasting to uplift and encourage fellow troops “in country.”

For his service and dedication, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Beyond his military service, John’s life has been filled with adventure, music, friendship, and love for family.

It was truly an honor to celebrate him this morning and recognize the incredible life he has lived.

John, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and the joy you continue to bring to those around you. We are proud to honor you.

And to all of the Veterans who joined us this morning — thank you!

It is our privilege to host these gatherings and celebrate the heroes in our community. ❤️🤍💙

“ActivAge gives me peace of mind, both for me and for my mom.”

That’s what a “daycation” at ActivAge looks like: singing, dancing, arts and crafts, bowling, live music, and friends who are happy to see her!

And the part families don’t expect? Many of our members improve both cognitively and physically.

The become sharper, steadier, and more themselves!

If you’re carrying it all right now, you don’t have to. Stop by, take a tour, and experience the magical moments we get to see everyday!

🇺🇸 Veteran of the Month — John Darryl DeGroot 🇺🇸 This month, we are proud to recognize First Lieutenant John Darryl DeGroot, a United States Army Veteran whose life reflects service, creativity, adventure, and a love for connecting with others.

John served our country during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971 as a First Lieutenant with the Armed Forces Vietnam Network.

Through his work in radio and television broadcasting, John played an important role in helping lift the spirits and boost the morale of fellow troops serving “in country.”

For his meritorious service and dedication, John was awarded the Bronze Star and the Joint Service Commendation Medal — honors that reflect the impact of his service and commitment to those around him.

After leaving the military, John turned his passion for broadcasting into a successful civilian career. He moved to Northern Michigan, where he built, owned, and managed a group of local radio stations until his retirement in 1996.

Retirement gave John even more time to pursue another lifelong passion — sailing.

His adventures have taken him across the Great Lakes, Canada’s North Channel, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, and the Florida Keys, creating memories along the way that reflect his adventurous spirit.

Today, John calls Punta Gorda home and is celebrating 36 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Lisa. He is also a proud stepfather to two daughters, a grandfather to one beautiful granddaughter, and a fast friend to his sweet new cat, Pepper.

John is happiest when he’s surrounded by good friends, listening to music, dancing, singing, and enjoying life.

John, thank you for your service, your dedication, and the joy and energy you continue to share with those around you.

We are honored to celebrate you as our Veteran of the Month. ❤️🤍💙
