๐ŸŒง๏ธ STORM PREP: DONโ€™T WAIT FOR THE POWER TO GO OUT ๐Ÿ”Œ๐Ÿš‘

With wind and periods of rain expected in our area this weekend, Port Jervis EMS wants to remind everyone to prepare now, especially residents who depend on electricity for medical equipment.

If you or someone in your home relies on an oxygen concentrator, CPAP/BiPAP, nebulizer, powered mobility device, refrigerated medication, or other electrically powered medical equipment**, please have a plan in place before an outage occurs.

๐Ÿ”‹ Charge backup batteries and portable power supplies
๐Ÿซ Make sure backup oxygen is available if prescribed
๐Ÿ’Š Have medications and necessary supplies readily available
๐Ÿ“ฑ Keep phones and emergency devices fully charged
๐Ÿ”ฆ Have flashlights and extra batteries accessible
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Check on family, friends, and neighbors who may need assistance
โšก Know how to report an outage to your electric provider.
Do not wait until your medical equipment stops working to make a plan.

If a power outage creates an immediate medical emergency, call 911.

A little preparation now can make a big difference when the lights go out.

Stay safe and stay prepared, Port Jervis. โค๏ธ

We know, we knowโ€ฆ fall doesnโ€™t officially start until Tuesday.

But while the leaves are supposed to hit the ground, weโ€™d prefer our community didnโ€™t. ๐Ÿ˜‚

And if you do? Wellโ€ฆ weโ€™ll be there to pick you back up.

Stay safe, watch your step, and enjoy the season!

๐Ÿ’œ September is Su***de Prevention Month.

Your child probably knows 911. Make sure they know 988 too.

๐Ÿ“ฑ 988 is the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline available 24/7 by call or text for anyone who is overwhelmed, struggling, or worried about someone else.

And it may be making a difference: a 2026 JAMA research letter found 11% fewer su***des than projected among adolescents and young adults after the launch of 988, with the largest declines in states where 988 use grew the most.

One conversation can save a life.

๐Ÿšจ REMINDER - ORANGE COUNTY EMERGENCY EXERCISE TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

Tomorrow, Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus and the Orange County Department of Emergency Services will conduct a large-scale emergency exercise simulating a significant flooding event across Orange County.

โš ๏ธTHIS IS ONLY A TEST.
County departments and emergency response partners working together in the Emergency Operations Center will be on hand to test how we coordinate, communicate, manage resources, and respond during a major emergency.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Residents may also receive a TEST emergency alert as part of the exercise.

Orange County will be testing its Countywide Emergency Alert System during the exercise. Compatible mobile devices within the targeted area may automatically receive the test message - no registration is required.

โš ๏ธ If you receive an emergency alert on September 9 as part of this exercise, THIS IS ONLY A TEST. There is no emergency, and no action is required.

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, making it the perfect time to test the systems, plans, and partnerships we rely on when a real emergency happens.

๐Ÿš‘ September is National Preparedness Month ๐Ÿš‘

Port Jervis EMS encourages our community to be ready for the unexpected.

One issue we commonly see is patients who rely on oxygen concentrators or other medical devices without a backup plan for power outages. Losing power can quickly create an emergency.

A few important ways to prepare:

โ€ข Build an emergency kit
โ€ข Keep medications and medical information updated
โ€ข Check smoke and CO alarms
โ€ข Make a family emergency plan
โ€ข If you use power-dependent medical equipment, have a backup oxygen source, charged batteries, or generator/backup power plan

Preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow. ๐Ÿ’™

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

Orange County Emergency Services encourages everyone to take the time to check in with the people around you - especially those who spend their lives responding when others need help.

Our first responders see and experience things most people never will. They should never have to carry that weight alone.

The Orange County First Responder Peer Support Program provides confidential support by first responders, for first responders, as well as support for their families.

If you or someone you know needs support, reach out:

Checking in matters. Asking for help matters. You do not have to do it alone.
