This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, We Must Stand with Survivors
Domestic violence impacts millions of people each year, but it can be prevented. It requires the collective voice and power of individuals, families, institutions, and systems taking action to stand with survivors, always.
A proclamation ceremony was held at the Port Orange Regular City Council meeting on October 6, 2026, recognizing October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We invite you to join us in taking collective action to end domestic violence. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Every day, advocates and local domestic violence programs are there to help. But across the United States, countless programs are currently facing funding shortages and operating at reduced capacity. Some have even had to close their doors.
Right here in Port Orange, the Port Orange Police Department has served 1136 victims of abuse and violence this past year ALONE.
The Port Orange Police Department’s Victim Advocate Office offers the following services to the victims of crime and tragedies:
• A database of community resources to assist victims of crime, families, and the elderly
• Assistance in filling all paperwork for injunctions for protection, victim impact statements, and victim compensation forms
• Emotional support during medical, criminal justice procedures, and law enforcement matters
• Family/Criminal court orientation, support and advocacy
• Transportation to aid victims of crime
• Assistance with emergency needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and transportation
• Death and injury notifications in cases of domestic violence, homicides, and other related criminal offenses
This October, join the Port Orange Police Department as we mourn for those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrate the tremendous progress victim advocates have made over the years, and connect to meet our current moment. Together, we must stand with survivors. Always.
