Today I had the honor of presenting Joe Hartman with his red helmet, marking his promotion to the position of Lieutenant with Port Orange Fire Rescue.

Joe has worked hard for this opportunity, and I am confident he will serve our department and our community well in his new role.

Please join me in congratulating Lieutenant Joe Hartman on his promotion and this next chapter in his career.

We don’t just tell you about important events happening in our community, Port Orange Fire Rescue shows up to support them as well.

On Saturday, September 19th, members of POFR took part in a 22-mile walk hosted by, Speak Up, Tomorrow Needs You, supporting their mission to raise awareness for military veteran and first responder mental health and su***de prevention.

I could say that I couldn’t be more proud of this department, but somehow, each day I work here, I find myself even more proud of this organization and, most importantly, the people who make it what it is.

Saturday was another one of those days.

22 miles! A great cause. And a group of people willing to show up for something bigger than themselves.

On September 11th, we climb 110 floors to honor the 343 firefighters lost on 9/11. Today, we walk 22 miles to show our support for military veterans and first responders and to bring awareness to mental health and su***de prevention.

The reasons for the two events are different, but both are about remembering those we have lost and standing beside those who are still with us.

Today, every mile has a purpose.

What was it like? To be one of them….the 343. We will never really know but in their honor we do this. 9/11 stair climb 25 years later. Never forget!

We made a promise.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation witnessed unimaginable loss, extraordinary courage, and a level of sacrifice that will forever be part of who we are.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 carries a special weight. We remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and never returned home. We remember the first responders, civilians, service members, and families whose lives were forever changed, as well as those who continued to suffer in the years that followed.

At Port Orange Fire Rescue, we honor that legacy through service to our community and by answering the call when someone needs us most.

That is how we honor those who came before us.

Twenty-five years later, the faces may change, the uniforms may change, and generations will come and go, but the promise is kept:

We Will Never Forget.

🦆 Not every rescue involves people.
This week, firefighters from Station 71 came to the aid of a small family of ducklings trapped in a storm drain. Thanks to their quick response and patience, the ducklings were safely rescued and returned to safety.
Great work by our firefighters for making a difference, one rescue at a time! 🚒

Please join us this weekend in honoring one of our fallen firefighters, Craig Morrisey.
