🚨 SCAM ALERT: HOW TO SPOT A SCAM CALL 🚨
Scammers are getting better at making their calls sound legitimate, and they may even pretend to be law enforcement officers. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office wants you to know the warning signs so you can protect yourself and your family!
📞 How can you tell if a call might be a scam?
🚩 They threaten you. The caller claims you have a warrant or will be arrested if you don't act immediately.
🚩 They demand money. They ask you to pay fines, bail, or other fees using gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps.
🚩 They claim a loved one is in jail. The caller says a family member needs money immediately for bail or release and pressures you to pay before you can verify the story.
🚩 They pressure you to act fast. They don't want you to hang up, ask questions, or talk to anyone else.
🚩 They ask for personal information. They may ask for your Social Security number, bank details, passwords, or verification codes.
🚩 They use a familiar name or phone number. Scammers may impersonate real employees or manipulate caller ID to make a call appear legitimate.
🛑 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
✅ Hang up if something doesn't feel right.
✅ Never send money or share sensitive information because of an unexpected call.
✅ Verify the information independently. Contact the agency or jail using an official phone number you look up yourself.
✅ Report suspected scams to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
Remember: A convincing phone call doesn't mean it's legitimate! Scammers rely on fear, urgency, and confusion to get what they want. Take a breath, verify the facts, and don't let anyone pressure you into sending money.
