,

I wanted to share an update about our original Haverhill building and how it will continue supporting students across Portage.

Beginning in June 2027, **Moorsbridge Elementary will undergo a major renovation**, including updated learning spaces, windows, flooring, furniture, and air conditioning throughout the building.

During the **2027–28 school year, Moorsbridge students and staff will temporarily use the original Haverhill building**. Because Moorsbridge’s enrollment exceeds that building’s capacity, a small portion of its students and staff will temporarily attend Central Elementary.

The renovations are expected to be finished in time for the **2028–29 school year**. This plan allows the work to be completed in a single school year while limiting disruption to learning.

**Please help us share this update with our neighbors and friends**, especially those living near the original Haverhill building. A district press release will be available shortly, if it hasn’t been shared already.

We’re happy the old Hive can continue serving our PPS community! Thank you to the Portage community for supporting the bonds that make these improvements possible and for continuing to put students first. 🐝

🌟 Mr. Hause’s curiosity reaches beyond the Hive!

One of his hobbies is stargazing, and he shared these two photos he took last night. In the full-sky photo, look for the streak of a satellite passing by during the long exposure! 🛰️

Thank you, Mr. Hause, for sharing your hobby and reminding our Hornets there’s always something amazing to discover. Families, take a moment to look up together tonight! ✨

🐝 A HUGE thank you to Kalamazoo Seating Service Group (KSSG) for always showing up for our Hornets!

This week, KSSG donated THREE reclining chairs to the Hive! Two will help make our health room a comfortable place for students to rest when they aren’t feeling well, before returning to class or heading home.

The third is currently in Mr. Zonts’ office, where it has quickly become a threat to productivity. 😂 For the good of the school, it will be moving to a more suitable location. Stay tuned!

Thank you, KSSG, for your generosity and for helping us care for our Hornets. We’re grateful to have you in our Hive! 💛🖤

💛🖤 October 15: White Cane Safety Day! 🦯

Today, we recognize White Cane Safety Day, also known as Blind Americans Equality Day!

This day celebrates people who are blind or have low vision and reminds us that everyone has unique strengths, abilities, and ways of experiencing the world.

🦯 Did you know? A white cane helps people who are blind or have low vision travel safely and independently. Tools like braille, audio books, and talking technology also help people learn, communicate, and navigate their surroundings.

At Haverhill, we want every Hornet to feel welcomed, included, and valued. We are fortunate to have students and families who bring different experiences and abilities to our HIVE, and we can all learn from one another!

How can our Hornets be great classmates?
🐝 Include everyone in games and activities.
🐝 Introduce yourself when speaking to someone who may not see you.
🐝 Ask before offering help.
🐝 Use words to give directions instead of pointing.
🐝 Respect everyone's independence and abilities.

We've included a helpful Haverhill Hornets Do's & Don'ts flyer with some great reminders for our students and families.

At Haverhill, our differences make us stronger, and everyone belongs in our HIVE! 💛🖤

🍬🐝 It’s a close race, Hornets!

Both floors have collected just over 13 pounds of candy for Trunk or Treat, and the first floor is ahead by just a few OUNCES! Who will take the lead next? 👀

Keep those donations coming through October 28! Place your candy in your floor’s collection bin across from the cafeteria.

🎟️ Remember to label each bag with your child’s first AND last name and grade so they’re entered into the Golden Ticket drawing!

Thank you for helping keep our trunks full for Trunk or Treat on October 29, from 6–7 p.m.! 🎃

🎃🍬 Let the candy competition begin, Hornets!

Our **Floor vs. Floor Candy Challenge starts today!** Help us fill the trunks for Trunk or Treat. The floor that collects the most candy by weight wins bragging rights! 🏆

Last year, families donated **over 200 pounds of candy**, with the first floor taking the win at **122 pounds!** Can the second floor claim the title this year?

🎟️ **Want a chance at a GOLDEN TICKET?**
Label your candy bags with your child’s **first and last name AND grade level**. One winner from each grade will get to go to the front of the Trunk or Treat line!

🍬 Drop donations in the bins **inside the school, across from the cafeteria**. Make sure your candy goes in the correct floor’s bin! Mailing labels, masking tape, or painter’s tape work great for labeling.

Happy Monday, Haverhill Family!

Our Positive Behavior Incentive Staff Vs. Student's Kickball game is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29th.
It's a staff and student ONLY event. We don't' have adequate space or supervision for families, but we will be sure to share all the videos and photos!

We'd like to have the teachers dress up in inflatable costumes (shhhhh don't tell your kids, it's a surprise) We're looking for donations of any inflatable costumes to make the game even more exciting! Thank you for checking! We appreciate you.
