Nicolas and Lester live in Sontole, Diriamba Departmento of Nicaragua. Their colonies are strong with a good source of nectar and pollen. The rainy season was not as strong this year so their farm did not produce much crops/vegetables.
We will be visiting Nicolas and Lester next week as we head down to Nicaragua for 2 weeks of beekeeping -- training new beekeepers and visiting those beekeepers we trained on our last visit.

Apolonia and Eduardo live in El Crucero just southwest of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. They have been with the Nicaragua Bee Project (NBP) for 2 years now. Apolonia grows coffee and is always ready to serve us a cup of coffee when we visit her.
When they started in the NBP, they had problems with ants destroying their colonies. So Eduardo designed hive stands with buckets and concrete to prevent the ants from getting inside the hives. Things are looking better for them now and the colonies are strong.
I will get some coffee from Apolonia and if you are one of the lucky people following us online, you will win a bag of Nicaraguan coffee. See less

Huber and Bryan live in Los Jobos, Rivas Departmento in Nicaragua. They are in their 2nd year of beekeeping. They are sponsored by the Long Beach, CA Beekeeping Association.
As they have their hives on a natural habitat area, they didn't need to feed their bees as there are many trees and flowers. Their colonies are super strong with a perfect brood.
I will see if I can bring back some of their honey for the Long Beach CA Beekeeping Association.

Lester and Nicolas are from Sontole, in the Diriamba department. Their colonies are looking very good, bringing in pollen but not enough nectar so Bismar advised them to feed the colonies with sugar syrup to stimulate the queen to lay eggs so the hive will be strong for the honey flow.

NBP Country Coordinator Bismar visited the new beekeepers on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua who had been trained and received their beekeeping kits at the beginning of 2026.
Mario, our project beekeeper on the island accompanied Bismar on these visits.
Bismar showed Javier and his wife Susan how to assess the vitality of their hives by asking the 3 questions -
1. Is there adequate space?
2. Is there enough food?
3. Is there a queen?

Oswaldo and Mariano live in the village of Esquipulas on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua. They received their beekeeping kits last February 2026.
Bismar and Mario visited their bee yard and discussed the importance of feeding the colonies to keep them strong during the rainy season when pollen and nectar is minimal.

Apolonia and Eduardo live in El Crucero, not far from the Masaya Volcano. south of Managua.
In the past, they lost their colonies to ants, but they have persevered and made innovations to protect their bees and are happy to see their colonies surviving and thriving.

On September 29th, Maynor visited with Aquiles, who lives in Lomas de Cafen near Teustepe, Nicaragua. Aquiles is a farmer who is interested in the Nicaragua Bee Project and has been helping Ismael, a new beekeeper with his 2 hives in Pena de Cafe.
Maynor discussed the project with Aquiles and they conducted a field study to determine if there was sufficient water and flowering vegetation for bees.
Aquiles will meet with the Americans at the end of October when the team from USA is in Nicaragua and will receive his training, bees and beekeeping equipment.

Maynor also visited Ricardo, a new beekeeper in the Boaco, Nicaragua area. It has been raining in the area and so Ricardo's avocado and passion fruit plantations have begun to bloom and the bees are busy collecting pollen. The queens are laying eggs at an accelerated rate and the nectar flow is also strong.
Ricardo hopes to do divisions by the end of this year. That will increase his colonies to 4.

Last Sunday, September 27th, Maynor visited Marcos, a new beekeeper in Barraco Alto. Marcos couldn't join Maynor to check the colonies as he was recovering from chikungunya, so Marcos' dad Carlos went with Maynor to the bee yard.
They have been getting some good heavy rains so the vegetation has improved and the beehives have undergone significant change. The bees are bringing in pollen.
Carlos is very happy with what he has seen as the colonies are getting stronger. He has planted watermelons and so the bees will not be lacking pollen in the coming months.
