English
It can be hard to know how to talk about sexual violence or healthy relationships. But you don’t need to have all the answers to start these important conversations.

You can try asking things like:
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect in relationships. What does ‘respect’ mean to you?
How do you give or ask for consent?
What kind of social media boundaries do you think couples and friends should have?

Start small, listen without judgement, and give youth the space to talk through their thoughts or ask questions.

You can find more resources at ItStartsWithUsNM.org.

English

Treating the youth around us with respect teaches them that is how they deserve to be treated by others.

We can be good mentors and empower the youth in our lives by actually giving them choices and respecting their answers, especially when they say “no”.

When we encourage them to make their own choices, we are teaching them that their boundaries matter.

English
Being a good friend isn't about agreeing on everything or always saying the right thing.

It's about showing up for each other when things are messy.

Sometimes that can look like being there for a friend who is going through something difficult. Sometimes it looks like being respectful of each other even when we are upset or annoyed. Sometimes it looks like apologizing for something we did that hurt our friend.

It takes practice and trust, but our friendships are stronger when we show up for each other even when it is hard!

Image Description: Bold text reads “You don’t have to be perfect to be a good friend, just be there" over a photo of two teenage girls sitting on a grass field and talking. ItStartsWithUsNM.org and the hashtag appear in a dark banner at the bottom of the graphic.

Spanish

English
Consent is an important part of all our relationships, but that doesn’t mean it always needs to be a big conversation.

We already ask for consent all the time with simple questions like “Is it okay if I borrow your pen?” or “Can I sit with you at lunch?”

You can keep practicing consent by being curious about how other people are feeling and making a point to ask.

The more we check in with each other during small everyday situations, the more confident we will be talking about consent in all areas of our lives!

Image Description: Bold text reads “Consent doesn’t have to be complicated" over a picture of calculus notes written on graph paper. The website ItStartsWithUsNM.org and the hashtag appear in a dark banner at the top of the graphic.

Today is national women’s quality day. Women experience significantly higher risks of sexual violence compared to their male counterparts. This is why pushing for the equality of women is such a massive deal, as women receive better rights and respect, their likelihood of experiencing sexual violence decreases. Today, we want to thank and honor all of the women who worked so hard to push for the civil rights that many of us women enjoy today.

Today is National Disability Independence Day, a day celebrating when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The ADA protects the employment of individuals with disabilities, as well as provides access to resources. Access to these resources and employment opportunities can decrease the risk of violence for individuals with disabilities, including sexual violence!
