First Responder Friday: Honoring Those Who Serve Us

This week for First Responder Friday, we have Sergeant Victor Ordonez of the Portales Police Department. Sgt. Ordonez was born and raised in Portales and graduated from ENMU with a B.S. in criminal justice in 2019. He joined the Portales Police Department after graduation, now serving in his seventh year.

When asked what made him want to do this job, he explained that he admired those who dedicated their lives to serving others and wanted a career with purpose. His favorite part of serving Portales is the opportunity to be someone the community trusts and is comfortable approaching for help. He said that in Portales, it is easy to build genuine relationships with the people he serves, which makes his job even more impactful.

His advice to anyone considering a career as a law enforcement officer? Becoming a police officer is more than putting on a badge and a uniform. It is a lifestyle and a commitment a commitment to protecting and serving your community, making ethical decisions, and holding yourself to a higher standard, even and especially when nobody else is watching.

Sgt. Ordonez, thank you for all that you do for the people of Portales!
