🍻 Get ready to raise a glass and celebrate 15 years of Porter’s Perfect Pint!

Join us Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at beautiful Hawthorne Park for another fun-filled day supporting a great cause!

For 15 years, Porter’s Perfect Pint has been more than just an event — it’s become a tradition built on community pride, generosity, and giving back. Thanks to the incredible support of our partners and community, we’ve now raised more than $290,000 to support our Parks Department and Fire Department — two important pillars that help keep Porter safe, strong, and thriving.

Over the years, these funds have helped the Parks Department upgrade playground equipment, enhance our green spaces, and keep our parks welcoming for families. Our Fire Department has also been able to receive essential gear, equipment, and training that help protect our community every day.

None of this would be possible without YOU and the amazing support behind Porter’s Perfect Pint!

Come celebrate 15 incredible years with us on October 3rd. We can’t wait to see you there!

🍻 We’ll be looking for you! Cheers to 15 years of Porter’s Perfect Pint! 🎉

HEY PORTER — can we show some love to the businesses that keep showing up for our community?! 👏

As we get ready for Pint Fest, we’ve had businesses step up and donate to our silent auction, and we want to make sure their generosity gets recognized.

Local businesses get asked to donate to just about everything — and yet, time and time again, they still find ways to support community events and organizations like ours. That deserves a shoutout.

So when you see us sharing our Pint Fest donors, give them some love. Support the businesses that support our community. ❤️

And if you’re a business that would still like to be part of the silent auction, we’re still accepting donations! Shoot us a message and we’ll take care of pickup.

Oh, and while we have everyone’s attention…

Pint Fest is NEXT WEEK. 🍻

You know what to do. 😉

Grab those tickets and come support Porter Fire AND Porter Parks!

FRADD 2026 CANCELED DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER

We are disappointed to share that, after consultation with the National Weather Service and Porter County Emergency Management, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel today’s First Responder Appreciation & Demonstration Day.

FRADD was planned to be a rain-or-shine event, and we were prepared for rain. Unfortunately, the forecasted conditions, particularly the threat of lightning and severe weather, create public safety concerns that we simply cannot ignore. The safety of our attendees, participating first responders, volunteers, vendors and staff has to come first.

An incredible amount of work has gone into preparing for today, and more than 60 departments, agencies and organizations were ready to join us on campus. We know how much our community looks forward to FRADD, and we are absolutely devastated that we cannot welcome everyone today.

To every first responder, volunteer, sponsor, vendor, partner and community member who has supported this event: thank you. We are incredibly grateful for you, and we are so sorry that circumstances beyond anyone’s control have brought us to this decision.

Please help us spread the word that FRADD is canceled today, Saturday, September 19. Thank you for understanding and for continuing to support the MAAC Foundation and our first responders.

🍺 Alright Porter… have you bought your Pint Fest tickets yet?!

Because October 3rd is creeping up QUICK, and spending a Saturday afternoon at Hawthorne Park with a pint in your hand sounds a whole lot better than whatever else you were planning. 😂

Porter’s Perfect Pint is celebrating 15 YEARS this year, and we want to pack the park.

Come try some great b**r, hang out with friends, get a little competitive with the games, and enjoy an afternoon in Porter — all while helping raise money for the Porter Volunteer Fire Department and Town of Porter Parks Department.

And yes… every dollar raised goes right back into supporting both organizations.

🍻 VIP gets in at 12 PM
🍺 General Admission starts at 1 PM
🎉 We keep it going until 5 PM

So text the group chat. Tag the friend who always says “I’m down” and then waits until the last minute. 😂 And most importantly…

VFW and American Legion to host 25th anniversary remembrance of the terror attacks

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2511 of Porter and American Legion Post 170 of Chesterton will observe the 25th anniversary of the terror attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, outside the Community Building at Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Drive, Porter.

Participating in the ceremony will be the Chesterton, Porter, Burns Harbor, and Liberty Township Volunteer fire departments; the Chesterton, Porter, and Burns Harbor police departments; EMTs and first-responders from Northwest Health-Porter; and elected and appointed officials representing the Tri-Towns.

The ceremony will begin with an introduction, a prayer, and an address. Wreaths will be laid honoring the FDNY and the other New York first-responders, the 3,000 victims, and the servicemen and -women who lost their lives in the Middle East in the coming years. An Honor Guard will then conduct a 21-gun salute, followed by Taps and dismissal.

Remember always, that the 2,977 innocents lost that day may never be forgotten. Honor the bravery of the first-responders and all of the others who served in the days and years that followed. Because, united and determined, we stand together stronger, today, tomorrow, and always.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN THE CHESTERTON TRIBUNE ON THURSDAY, SEPT. 13, 2001

There are no words. No words that mean.

No categories. No precedents. No context.

We have only clichés. And because we must say something, we cycle through them as we cycle through the channels on cable.

It’s a tragedy.
An act of terror.
A catastrophe.
An atrocity.
Despicable.
Cowardly.
Evil.
Mad.
More calamitous than Pearl Harbor.
Like Kennedy’s assassination.
Unlike Oklahoma City.
Nothing will ever be the same.

So do headlines pass for history and sound bites for wisdom. And as we sit staggered at the kitchen table, in the church pew, on the bar stool, with a raw hole in our heart where our naïveté used to be, these agonal expressions begin to appear thin and mean. We have the language to speak of love and hate, of Heaven and Hell, but not a single trope to go to the heart of this thing.

In truth, we would do well to seek not solace but silence. Fold up the newspaper, turn off the TV, and let us wrest a space of peace, a day, an hour, time enough and still for the dust and ash to settle deeply one our souls.

Certainly the chattering of the journalists have their purpose and value. The body counts, the rescue operations, the ticker crawls, the expert commentary: These give shape to this thing, they make the surreal real. Yet they can no more unravel the unintelligible than an apple can original sin. We will never assimilate this thing. We will never accommodate it. We can only accept it as we would the death of a loved one.

For once in our lives we must be honest. This talk of a new dark day in America, when we can no longer expect security on our own soil, is just so much twaddle. No American, no human, has ever enjoyed such a pledge. Times have been parlous since time began, uncertain and baffling, and our very existence is as finespun as gossamer. Life is precious only because it is tenuous, our achievements grand only because transient.

So pray. Or curse. Or cry. Or rage. Love your spouses and children harder. But don’t look for those illusory balms of “healing” or “closure.” Our pain must never dull. The wound must always weep. Our routine will return, it already has, but as Americans we must embrace and endure those last ghastly moments of our nation’s martyrs as our own. They died in our place and part of us died with them.
