When vertigo becomes part of a WWE storyline, is it raising awareness or reinforcing misconceptions? 🤔

WWE wrestler Kendal Grey has recently been in the spotlight after experiencing vertigo and balance problems that became part of her on-screen storyline.

In one segment, an on-screen doctor offered a confusing explanation of her symptoms and recommended seeing a sports psychologist. Other segments have focused on Grey's confidence and personal insecurities, raising questions about how vestibular symptoms are being portrayed.

For millions of people living with vestibular disorders, dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems are very real symptoms that can significantly impact daily life. While these conditions can also affect mental health, they aren't simply a matter of confidence or mental toughness.

Entertainment has the power to bring visibility to misunderstood health conditions, but representation matters.

Do you think WWE's portrayal of vertigo is helping raise awareness, or could it be reinforcing misconceptions about vestibular disorders? Share your thoughts in the comments!

🦩 A flamboyance of flamingos found an unusual place to ride out Hurricane Isaias: a zoo bathroom!

As the storm approached Florida, staff at ZooWorld in Panama City Beach moved 30 flamingos indoors for safety. The pink birds spent their time honking, strutting, and making themselves right at home.

Among the flock was 10-year-old Mr. Sparklepants, the group's senior member, along with 3-year-olds Scuttle and Mango Shrimproll, who had been raised at the zoo since hatching.

Because when a hurricane is coming, even Mr. Sparklepants needs a safe place to shelter! 🦩

If you are in a state affected by Hurricane Isaias, how were your vestibular symptoms affected?

When your provider asks, “When do you get dizzy?” the details matter.

Does it happen when you roll over in bed? When you turn your head? Does it come in distinct episodes? How long does it last?

The timing and triggers of dizziness can provide important diagnostic clues. Positional episodes may suggest BPPV, symptoms associated with head movement can occur with vestibular hypofunction, and vestibular migraine can cause recurring episodes of vestibular symptoms that aren't necessarily triggered by changing position.

None of these patterns provides a diagnosis on its own, but describing when it happens, what brings it on and how long it lasts can give your healthcare provider valuable information. Learn more: https://vestibular.org/article/diagnosis-treatment/types-of-vestibular-disorders/

Nobody warned me I’d become this opinionated about carpet.

When you live with a vestibular disorder, completely ordinary things can suddenly become things you notice everywhere.

The lighting. The floor pattern. How visually busy the store is. Whether there’s an escalator. And yes, exactly where you’re sitting at the restaurant.

What would you add to the list?

Maybe it was the first time the room spun.

Maybe you suddenly couldn't walk straight, drive, tolerate a grocery store, or explain why you felt so off.

For many people, there’s a moment in their vestibular journey when they realize: something is really wrong. Are you new on this journey? Learn more: https://vestibular.org/article/what-is-vestibular/

A vestibular diagnosis doesn't always come alone.

Someone may experience BPPV and vestibular migraine, or develop PPPD following another vestibular condition. When disorders coexist, symptoms can overlap, making diagnosis and treatment more complicated.

Sometimes the answer isn't finding the one condition responsible for everything. It's identifying all the pieces involved.

How many diagnoses did it take to explain your symptoms? Learn more: https://vestibular.org/article/diagnosis-treatment/

It doesn't always happen all at once.

First you stop going to the grocery store when it's busy. Then restaurants feel like too much. Driving gets harder. Plans start getting canceled. Eventually, staying home can feel safer than risking another bad symptom day.

For many people with vestibular disorders, dizziness doesn't just affect balance. It can affect independence, relationships, work, social life and the freedom to simply go somewhere without thinking twice. Are you in need of support? We're here for you. https://vestibular.org/article/coping-support/

Ever feel like your brain is buffering? 🧠

Brain fog is a common complaint among people with vestibular disorders. When your brain is working harder to keep you balanced and oriented, tasks that once felt automatic can require more cognitive effort. That can show up as trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, mental fatigue or simply feeling like your thinking is slower than usual.

Brain fog is more than feeling distracted. It can be a real part of living with vestibular dysfunction.

Vestibular disorders don't care how famous you are.

Athletes, musicians, actors and entrepreneurs have publicly shared their experiences with vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, Ménière's disease, vestibular migraine and other balance conditions.

Their stories are different, but they help make something often invisible a little more visible.

Try this: pick an object in front of you and keep looking at it while slowly turning your head side to side. 👀

Your vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is helping keep that object in focus.

The VOR connects your vestibular and visual systems, automatically moving your eyes to compensate for head movement. When this reflex is impaired, the world may appear blurry, jumpy or even like it's bouncing as you move.

Pretty impressive for a reflex you probably never think about. Learn more: https://vestibular.org/article/diagnosis-treatment/vision-hearing/vision-challenges-with-vestibular-disorders/
