BLM Oregon & Washington The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for some of the most beautiful landscapes in the PNW

In western Oregon, the BLM manages two million acres of forest in a checkerboard ownership pattern. These forests provide important habitat for many threatened and endangered fish and wildlife species and are considered some of the most productive forests in the world. The public land found in eastern Oregon is characterized by large swaths of basin and range topography. These dramatic, semi-arid landscapes provide a wide variety of recreation and commercial opportunities while also proving habitat for a diverse array of fish and wildlife species. In Washington, the BLM lands are found predominantly east of the Cascade Mountain Range but can be visited as far west as the San Juan Islands. Habitats include the maritime Puget Sound lowlands, the central Columbia Basin sagebrush regime, many riparian zones, and the coniferous forest and sub-alpine areas of northeast Washington. The BLM compiles and maintains a vast amount of information about public lands. Records span a period of time from the 1785 Land Ordinance right up to present-day transactions. The statistics give an in-depth look at federal lands: who administers them, where they are, how they are used, how funds are generated and used, what plants and animals live there, what effect wildfire and prescribed fire haves, and more. The BLM manages more land – 245 million acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.

☀️☀️A panoramic view of a late summer afternoon at Mann Lake

Located below the east face of Steens Mountain in southeast Oregon, our Mann Lake Recreation Site is known for its remote, rugged splendor.

Aside from two vault restrooms, Mann Lake offers no amenities. Bring your own shade, shelter, and water, and be sure to tie everything down! Swift winds are common, and weather conditions are often unpredictable.

Welcome to one of the most beautiful places to see fall foliage in the Pacific Northwest: Smith River Falls

Oregon’s Smith River forms in the Coast Range and flows about 50 miles west, emptying into the Pacific Ocean just north of Reedsport, Oregon.

Our recreation area offers ten campsites along the Smith River, just above the falls. This peaceful, old-growth forest setting provides an ideal place to picnic, wade, fish, and watch for eagles.

🐍🐍This spooky season, we're highlighting a few of the amazing species that slither and crawl on your public lands

This Great Basin Rattlesnake was spotted on public lands in Deschutes County, Oregon. Photographer Riley Frasier had been trying to confirm the species' presence in Deschutes County for several years and finally got lucky.

According to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, if you encounter a rattlesnake, your first step should be to move away. The snake wants to avoid you too!

If the snake feels trapped, it may coil into itself and warn you with its rattle. Its very last line of defense will be to strike.

Want more snake safety? Use these ODFW tips:
✅Stick to well-used, open trails.
✅Avoid walking through thick brush. If you can't, use a walking stick to alert snakes of your approach.
✅Do not step or put your hands where you cannot see
✅Wear over-the-ankle boots and loose-fitting long pants.
✅Watch rattlesnakes from a distance and be aware of defense behaviors that mean you're too close!

🌊🌊On this day in 1968, the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act was signed into law.

This landmark act created a national rivers system that protects free-flowing rivers with “outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural or other similar values."

Here in Oregon, we manage 35 of these beautiful rivers for a little more than 1,000 miles, including the Crooked River, the Deschutes, the Clackamas, and the Rogue.

The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System now comprises 226 rivers for over 13,400 miles in 41 states. We're proud to do our part to keep these rivers free-flowing and healthy.

Planning a ritual under the light of the full moon on your public lands?

Remember to practice night hiking safety!

🌙 Wear warm layers
🌙 Familiarize yourself with your trail during the daytime before heading out at night
🌙 Use a red headlamp for the first 30 minutes to help your eyes adjust to the dark
🌙 Be prepared for the kinds of wildlife you may encounter in the area

The stunning beauty of the Lower John Day Wilderness Study Area captured just this spring

The John Day Wild & Scenic River is one of the longest free-flowing rivers in the contiguous United States. It meanders through rolling hills, open fields, and canyons up to 1,600 feet deep in central Oregon.

The John Day River System is protected under both the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act and the Oregon Scenic Waterways Act. Together, they provide the best protection possible for this Pacific Northwest gem. If you head out, remember to Pack It In, Pack It Out!

☀️☀️The summer sun sets over Summer Lake and the Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area just last month

The Diablo Mountain Wilderness Study Area is in Lake County, Oregon, near the small town of Paisley.

On the east side, its summits and ridges rise and then drop 2,000 feet. On the west side, the area has low rolling terrain, salt flats, and desert shrubs. From Summer Lake, it's possible to see the peaks of Abert Rim, Coglan Buttes, Winter Ridge, and Picture Rock Pass.

Get outside and see it for yourself!
