Yesterday's 2nd Alarm apartment fire is a great example of the learning opportunities that occur in the training program design within PF&R. Our black helmeted recruits respond to incidents with training specialists and apply skills introduced in their training environment in actual live emergencies. The training specialists take the time to use these opportunities to improve the skill set of the recruit class along with taking moments to collect the class after the fire is extinguished to discuss some features present at the incident that increases the learning occurring throughout the year of training.

There are many ways to train a firefighter, and this is what we believe is the most successful way for our organization to put firefighters on the line ready to respond to your emergencies.

responded to a 2nd alarm apartment fire in the Cully Neighborhood. Crews encountered a 4-plex tucked away in a flag lot with difficult access and no ability to gain access with a truck, so all ladders were walked up a distance from the incident. With the possibility of rescue in the type of structure, many ladders were needed and the first arriving truck staffed with both training specialists and recruits successfully laddered the building and were able to quickly gain access to all affected units and confirm all occupants were out of the structure. With heavy fire pushing out and impinging on a neighboring apartment building accessed from a different street the command officer requested a second alarm assignment placing over 50 members on duty assigned to this incident. Fortunately, the fire was kept to the main building with only 2 occupancies forced to relocate due to fire and water damage. No injuries were reported and the cause of this fire is currently under investigation.

Here are some still images of addressing the large fire in the industrial setting. This location serves a business that manufactures semi truck cabs and trailers and had many large items throughout their yard.

Upon arrival there was already a roll up door that had failed that allowed crews to stretch a handline to the opening and begin to apply water to the interior as well as the ladder pipe once established. The hydrants were quite a distance away forcing command to request more companies to scene to pump the water from the hydrant to the pumping rig and the aerial ladder truck. Crews used the initially failed door as well as cut access into an additional roll up door.

There was concern this fire would run the building to the west which abuts to a row of homes which you can see in the overhead map shot shared here. Crews were directed to the west end on NE 74th to set up and prepared for the fire to advance the entire building. Fortunately crews were able to make a stop and the home were never in danger of any impingement of the flames.

No injuries were reported and this fire is currently under investigation.

If you are commuting along I5 this morning, you may see performing their annual OHSU Evacuation Exercise. This is an annual training opportunity for both the Technical Rescue Team and those that operate the Tram.

Do not be concerned that this is an actual emergency. That said, our team will act as if this is an emergency from beginning to end so we "practice as we expect to play". We will share images from the training exercise later.

responded to an apartment complex on Thursday evening as the sun was setting with heavy fire throughout the exterior of the building and fire showing in the attic spaces as well. Crews addressed the fire that involved a vehicle leaking fuel, a active downed powerline dancing along the ground, and a difficult attic space to access and extinguish the fire. Seasoned firefighters worked alongside members at our training station in this incident and there were times when each and every fire crew assigned to the incident was working on a addressing something different with much going on. Monitoring a downed powerline-addressing a flammable liquid fire along with a vehicle fire, throwing ladders to access the roof, extending hose lines, protecting exposures, searching the structure, establishing a water supply. Just a lot going on for a bit. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the cause is under investigation.

The first day of the Training Academy is filled with administrative tasks. Following the initial directive and meeting the training staff, in Recruit Class 26-04 were sized for their protective turn out gear. The PF&R Uniforms Officer and the regional product rep size each member for their first pair of turnouts. These measurements taken today will have a new set of turnouts specifically fit to each member ready for them when they move on to experiencing live fire.

would like to share this short video on lithium ion batter safety on this 155th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire that began the efforts to establish a fire safety week natiunally, Fire Prevention Week 2026 takes place October 4–10, 2026, and the official NFPA theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focusing on lithium‑ion battery safety.

It is best to incorporate these rechargable batter use tips for increased home safety.
