Sauvie Island School Sauvie Island School: a Public Charter School offering Place-Based Education to the children of Sauv

“Place-Based Education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and other subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real-world experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, helps students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students’ appreciation for the natural world, and creates a heightened commitment to serving as active, contributing citizens.”
-David Sobel, author of Connecting Classrooms & Communities

This month we combined our Tasty Tuesday with Oregon Crunch! We crunched on some tortilla chips with fresh made salsa using produce from our school garden!

Students harvested tomatoes and cilantro in the morning and salsa was prepped and served to every student for snack. From vine to crunch in 90 minutes! Happy Farm to School Month 🍅

We are so excited! Sauvie Island School was awarded School Garden of the Year. Take a look at the kind words from the ODE.

The school garden that best demonstrates innovation and engages children in learning about Oregon food and agriculture.
This year's School Garden of the Year is a place where learning comes alive. Students explore science, nutrition, agriculture, sustainability, and healthy living through hands-on experiences in the garden. Supported by an incredible network of educators, families, volunteers, and community partners, this garden has become a centerpiece of the school community and a powerful connection between students and the food they eat. The Oregon Harvest for Schools School Garden of the Year is Sauvie Island School.

Thank you to our garden coordinator, Ms. Zoe, our families, staff, and community sponsors: Linnton Feed and Seed, Columbia Farms, Fazio Farms, Topaz Farm, Oak Island Farms, Bailey Nursery, Ford Farms, Ground Culture PDX, Marny and Roy Elicker, and Sauvie Island Grange.
This would not have been possible without your help and support.
