Fratelli Badini Extra Virgin Olive Oil 500ml 2025!

The Badini family has been here at the southern edge of Tuscany since the late 1800s and while they do make great w**e, olive oil is their real business. They have about 100 hectares of olive trees on steep hillsides of old sedimentary rock and last year got a brand new olive press that does a fantastic job of keeping the oil fresh and protected from oxygen. The trees average 30 years old and are mostly Moraiolo and Leccino olive varieties. This is the real deal. Those labels are hand written. I’m so excited to have oil of this quality at this accessible price.

Galognano 'SANTRe' Rosato 2024! You may not think of Autumn as season for rosé and you may not think of Tuscany as a source of great rosé, but this Sangiovese blend from the hills of the Val d'Elsa is a gorgeous relaxed rose with elegant dried cherry and touches of Tuscan herbs.

Santre is a blend of 85% Sangiovese with 15% Trebbiano blended in.  The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, and ferment spontaneously in concrete tank. Erika leaves the skins in for about 2 days and then transfers the w**e. After fermentation is all done she transfers the w**e off the sediment and lets it rest in concrete for another 5 months before bottling.

Aroma: very pretty and subtle strawberry, dried cherry, tart raspberry, oregano, and a little bit of dried rosemary. It smells kind of salty, kind of minerally. The aromas are bright and uplifted - there are a lot of fruit aromas - but they're not too juicy or dense in how they smell: more fresh and vibrant. There’s a little watermelon and a little bit of burnt orange peel as well

Taste: wow, it's the delicious savory salt that gets me. The fruit is bright strawberry, fresh tart raspberry, a little bit of cranberry but then there's this crisp crunchy salty mineral rocky mid palate. And on the back of that I get some dried herbs like rosemary oregano, and sage. This is dry, precise, vibrant and delicious! It tastes very very Tuscan!

Moretti Omero Terre di Giano 2025! Rich, full, juicy 100% Ciliegiolo from one of the highest elevation spots in Montefalco

You can find this at Walpole Barn, Waldoboro Inn, 44 North, Rayr, Crooked Spoon, First Fig, Vessel & Vine, Maine & Loire, and the Blue Hill W**e Shop

I've visited Moretti Omero and his daughter Giusy in Umbria a whole slew of times. They’re a great family w**ery that’s unpretentious but also thoughtful and working at a high level. Moretti Omero was effectively started by Omero Moretti (Omero is the Italian version of the name Homer) back in 1991. His father had made some w**e but it was small scale and Omero had started out with olive oil production and pig farming. Years ago he told me that the neighbors all complained about the smell of the pigs so much that he had to quit! It was good timing though as the Montefalco Rosso DOC was starting to take off and the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOC had just been created. **e **e

Tenuta La Favola 'Fravolato' Frappato 2025! A gorgeous, unique, and more structured expression of Frappato.

This bottling is 100% frappato, farmed organically on limestone and marl soil close to the sea. Hand harvested and then spontaneous fermentation with the skins for 10 days.  Aged in stainless steel after that.  This is a classically flavored Frappato, but it’s got more mineral structure and force of presence than I’m used to. Filippo’s Frappato from Lamoresca is my go to, but that comes from sandier soil and is more distant from the coast. Corrado’s Frappato is delicious and a different expression.

Conestabile della Staffa Case Sparse Orange! Delicious preserved and candied orange flavors with some aromatic thyme and oregano too!

Available at Maine & Loire, First Fig, Folk, and Table Bar

Case Sparse orange is made from 30 year old Grechetto vines grown at the Conestabile della Staffa estate.  The age of the vines combined with the rocky calcareous soil makes for great mineral structure. The vines are completely naturally farmed, the grapes are hand harvested, and then the juice ferments spontaneously in open top vats. This has a pretty longer maceration, but without too many punch downs, so the w**e isn’t too tannic and is not oxidative.

Eric Texier 'Brezeme' Cote du Rhone 2023! Classic spicy hedonistic Northern Rhone Syrah from a master!

Available at W**e House in Main, Brasserie le Brun, Now You're Cooking, Broad Arrow Farm, and Salt Wharf

Brezeme is a little appellation at the southern edge of the northern Rhone.  It's actually very exposed to winds coming over from the Alps and is a particularly cold climate.  The soil is a rocky mix of decayed limestone and clay.  This is 100% Syrah from vines that are about 30 years old.  This has one week of whole cluster maceration and then finishes fermentation and ages in cement tanks.  Both Brezeme and St Julien en St Alban were almost forgotten and abandoned as w**e regions 20 years ago.  Eric was lucky to discover them and find excellent old vineyard sites that produce complex racy w**es thanks to the cooler temperatures and rocky hillside locations.

Conestabile della Staffa Case Sparse Cabernet Sauvignon! Gorgeous dark Juicy spicy fruit, but poised and fresh!

Danilo surprised me with a Cabernet he had made from grapes grown by a friend of his in the hills up above lake Trasimeno. Danilo helped advise on the farming and then the farmer had more fruit than he needed and gave Danilo a great deal on some of the grapes. So Danilo made a Cabernet Sauvignon as an experiment! I was very skeptical when he brought it out; “Danilo making Cabernet?” I thought “what next, Ferrari making an electric SUV? Sacrilige!” But the Cabernet is actually fantastic. It has deliciously dark and dense fruit but it’s still juicy and has a freshness. And of course it has the minerality and tension that Danilo imbues all his w**es with. It’s 12.5% alcohol and beautifully balanced. So I asked him to put a Case Sparse label on it and I bought it! This fermented spontaneously and had a shortish maceration in open little 1000L vats before going into inert resin tanks and then being bottled.
