1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Researchers using data from VA’s Million Veteran Program found that a genetic risk model can accurately predict breast cancer risk in women Veterans, which can lead to personalized screenings based on risk.

Are you a Veteran turning 65 soon? Here’s what you need to know about your healthcare options:

Your VA healthcare, Medicare, and TRICARE For Life (TFL) can work together—the right mix depends on your needs.

Timing matters! Enroll in Medicare within 3 months before or after your birthday month to avoid penalties.

VA is its own system—no enrollment fee, and no bill to Medicare or TFL for VA care.
TFL fills the gaps, covering extras like routine eye exams.
Access and needs can change over time—Medicare keeps your options open.
Enrolling in VA or TFL doesn’t cancel the other.

Quick Checklist:

Confirm your VA healthcare benefits at https://www.va.gov/ or call 1-877-222-8387.
Check TFL eligibility in DEERS: 1-800-538-9552 or https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/
Check Medicare Part A & B timing: 1-800-772-1213 or https://www.ssa.gov/medicare
Still working? Ask your employer before delaying Part B.

Need help? Accredited Veterans Service Organization reps can guide you at no cost. Find one at https://www.va.gov/.
