🌎💧 Sharing Knowledge. Advancing Innovation. Building Global Connections.
Portland Water District recently welcomed an international delegation through the World Affairs Council of Maine and the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss how technology is transforming water utilities and supporting more efficient operations.

From improving how we collect and use data to making informed decisions about our infrastructure, technology continues to play an important role in the future of water utilities.

The IVLP brings current and emerging leaders from around the world to the United States to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and build lasting professional relationships. We appreciated the opportunity to showcase PWD’s work, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.

💧 Expanding access to water bill assistance 💧

Portland Water District is expanding its Lifeline Water Rates program to help more eligible customers keep essential water service affordable.

Through a new partnership with Maine DHHS, eligible customers will now be included in the assistance program without needing to apply or take any additional steps. Customers will be notified when the credit is applied to their account.

This expansion builds on PWD’s longstanding commitment to making water service more affordable and ensuring assistance reaches those who need it.

💧 What Does Clean Water Mean to You?💧

Tomorrow, October 15, is Imagine a Day Without Water — a national day of awareness highlighting the essential role water plays in our everyday lives.

From our morning coffee to protecting public health, supporting local businesses, and keeping our environment healthy, water makes so much possible. But reliable water service doesn’t happen by chance. It takes dedicated people, well-maintained infrastructure, and thoughtful investments to keep it flowing every day.

As we reshare this video from last year, we invite you to take a moment to reflect: What would a day without water look like for you? And what does clean water mean to you?

Because a day without water is a day none of us can afford.

Today, we celebrated an important achievement for North Windham!

Portland Water District joined the Town of Windham, U.S. Senator Susan Collins, and community partners for the ribbon cutting of the new North Windham Wastewater Treatment Facility.

This innovative project represents more than new infrastructure. It’s a commitment to protecting public health, improving water quality, and creating opportunities for housing, business development, and community growth.

Featuring advanced Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) technology, the facility is the first wastewater treatment and subsurface drip dispersal project of this magnitude in Maine.

Projects like this demonstrate what’s possible through collaboration. Thank you to the Town of Windham for its vision and leadership, Senator Collins and our state and federal partners for their support, and the many engineers, contractors, and PWD employees who helped bring this project to life.

Cleaner water. More opportunity. A stronger future for North Windham.

Portland Water District’s Meter Replacement Project Expands to Scarborough, Passes 40% Completion

Portland Water District’s meter replacement project is moving into Scarborough this week, with more than 40% of meters replaced across its service area. It will be moving into Cape Elizabeth soon.

Currently, VEPO Metering installers are working in nearly every community served by the Portland Water District. Customers will receive a letter with instructions for scheduling an appointment with VEPO Metering. The new meters will improve billing accuracy and support a future customer portal with water usage information and potential leak alerts.

Thank you to our customers for their cooperation and flexibility as we continue this important investment in our community's water system. Visit us online for more information, https://www.pwd.org/ami/.
