Sneaker waves are a common beach hazard in the fall and winter. There are times. like the next few days, when the ocean conditions increase the risk of water rising further up the beach than expected. For those planning to spend time at the coast this week be safe by by keeping a generous distance from the surf and staying off freshly wet sand. Never turn Your Back on the Ocean.

Here are the temperatures across the region this morning as of 7 AM. We are seeing a "temperature inversion" this morning where temperatures at higher elevations are WARMER than temperatures in the valleys. If you were to go up about 1500-2000 ft in elevation this morning, minimum temperatures have only fallen into the 60s. We're also seeing this in Troutdale where the east winds continue this morning.

Temperatures aloft will mix down this afternoon warming the lowland valleys back into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees again today!

The Great ShakeOut start in just over an hour at 10:15 am. Join millions across the country in practicing earthquake safety. Drop, Cover, and Hold On immediately. If you live, work or are recreating in a coastal area, then this is a great time to practice your tsunami evacuation routes. Wherever you are, protect yourself! Do not try to move, but protect yourself as best as possible where you happen to be.

As with anything, practice makes perfect. To be ready to protect yourself immediately when the ground begins to shake, practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On at least once a year.

Did you know that you can help the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) determine how much shaking was experienced by an earthquake? The USGS is the official authority for determining and reporting earthquake characteristics, and their 'Did You Feel It' website is used to collect human observations of earthquake shaking intensity.

After an earthquake is felt, people can fill out a quick, multiple-choice questionnaire on the USGS website about what they experienced during the earthquake. This data is used to create Community Internet Intensity Maps, which are color coded to visually show the varying levels of shaking intensity across the affected region.
