Media Release - Jury Duty Scam

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and several other law enforcement agencies, including the Portland Police Department, in Cumberland County have received reports of an ongoing scam. A person identifying themselves as a Lieutenant with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is contacting individuals, notifying them they have missed or are requested to report for Jury Duty.

The Cumberland County Sheriff and other law enforcement agencies are NOT responsible for the selection, scheduling, or appearances for those selected for Jury Duty.

If you get a call, text message, or other social media correspondence and are threatened with arrest, fine, or other sanction regarding JURY DUTY, abruptly hang up.

In no case should anyone ever divulge private or sensitive personal data, follow the scammers' instructions to transfer funds, gift cards, or any other type of monetary remuneration to avoid sanctions. If you get a call or have any questions or concerns, please call your local law enforcement.

Happy 250th Independence Day USA!
Here's a fun bit of July 4th history for you:

Delegates of the 2nd Continental Congress actually voted to approve American independence on July 2nd, 1776 but did not adopt the final wording of the Declaration of Independence until 2 days later on July 4th. Most members of Congress gathered in Philidelphia to sign the Declaration later that summer, on August 2nd. But the final signature was not collected until early 1777.

Cumberland County offices will be closed Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day.
