Familial status is a protected class under federal and Oregon fair housing law, and it covers more people than the phrase might suggest. Protections generally extend to families with children under 18, pregnant people, people in the process of obtaining legal custody of a minor child, and foster parents, grandparents, and other guardians living with minor children.

Signs of familial status discrimination can include a requirement that every child have a separate bedroom, a rule limiting families to first floor units, an advertisement stating a preference for adults, or extra rent and deposits charged because a household includes children.

There's no better way to spend a Sunday morning than biking through Historic Vanport and the Portland Expo Center. We listened to guest speakers Deena Nakata and Ed Washington as they shared their personal connections to these spaces, reminding us of the importance of solidarity amidst housing discrimination.

Knowledge of fair housing rights is power.

When renters understand their rights, they are better equipped to recognize and respond to housing discrimination, including unfair treatment of survivors of domestic violence, sexual harassment, illegal evictions, and the denial of reasonable accommodations or modifications for people with disabilities.

Your recurring gift of $15 a month helps empower renters and homebuyers with this knowledge and supports our advocacy for fair housing across Oregon all year long.

Everyone deserves access to housing free from discrimination. Make a monthly gift at fhco.org/donate.
