We had a full house at City Hall today! We welcomed Scouts of all ages from Southeast Portland for tours and a behind-the-scenes look at how our city government works.

It’s always great to see young people get excited about local government and learn more about City Hall’s history and what happens behind the scenes.
Who knows? We might have had a future City Councilor or two in the building today!

It’s been one year since the launch of the I-405 and District 4 Sidewalk Cleaning Initiative!

Last October, Portland Solutions’ Public Environment Management Office (PEMO) and Central City Concern’s Clean Start launched this initiative to provide sidewalk cleaning services on District 4’s busiest sidewalks five days a week.

Councilor Clark and I took it a step further by having our offices fund additional enhanced services targeting the streets along the I-405 corridor.

The program is run by CCC’s Clean Start, a homeless-to-work program that helps people rebuild stability in their lives. Employees are connected to supportive housing, healthcare, and substance use treatment, while also receiving job training, mentoring, and pathways to future employment.

Great work, PEMO and CCC, I know that I’ve seen the difference this program is making. Thank you.

Over the weekend, I was joined by Senator Wyden, Commissioner Brim-Edwards, Councilor Clark, Public Works Interim DCA Williams, and the fabulous Poison Waters to celebrate the grand reopening of Pride Plaza on Harvey Milk Street!

The event was a blast, featuring drag performances, LGBTQ+ vendors, live music, and DJ sets. Thanks for putting this together, .

Now, I can’t wait to see the placemaking improvements my office funded come to life, including rainbow crosswalks, banners, and more that will connect Pride Plaza with Darcelle XV Plaza.

Thanks for showing up, Portland!

I thought I was going to Maplewood Elementary to read to second graders, but they ended up reading me. Immediately one of the kids, very confidently, asked if I was 63.

Jokes aside, this may have been one of the best days on the job. It was so much fun connecting with these kids and starting my day with a smile.

Thanks for having me, Maplewood Elementary!

And just like that, summer in the Pacific Northwest is coming to a close. I spent my days connecting with Portlanders under the sun, while advancing multiple pieces of legislation through committee and onto Full Council.

I’m looking forward to the grand opening of the new and improved Pride Plaza this Saturday! I’ll be speaking alongside Councilor Oliva Clark, and the event will be full of LGBTQ+ vendors, live music, DJ sets, and more.

Not to be confused with the new Darcelle XV Plaza, Pride Plaza is located on SW Harvey Milk St between SW 12th and 13th. See you out there, Portland.

I want to thank the men and women of the Portland Police Bureau for their continued public service.

With reports of officers being hospitalized in Northwest Portland and then a report of one of our K9 officer’s death during a high-risk warrant operation, it is a reminder of the inherent risk that comes with serving.

My thoughts are with everyone affected by yesterday’s violence. I am truly sorry for the loss of our K9 officer Kylo.

Portland is on the upswing.

For the fifth year in a row, pedestrian activity has grown. This summer, more than 20 million Portlanders and visitors came Downtown. In fact, every month this year has seen higher visitor foot traffic than the same month last year. We’re now back to about 77% of pre-COVID foot traffic, but this is real progress, and we’re seeing the results.

Great work by the teams at PEMO, other Bureaus, Businesses, and community partners behind these efforts. Progress like this takes intentional collaboration between public and private partners to invest in downtown activations, safety, and cleanliness.

Now, it’s on us to keep the momentum going.
